Building Skills and Confidence in Bricklaying: Bradley’s Story

Choosing a Course That Builds Skills

Bradley is building real skills, gaining hands-on industry experience and growing in confidence through his bricklaying course at Bradford College. While working towards his Level 2 qualification, his hard work and determination have already been recognised. In fact, he has received the prestigious Inspirational Student of the Year Award in Construction.

After exploring different trade options, Bradley chose bricklaying and quickly found his place on the course. Over the past two and a half years, he has developed strong technical skills. He has also gained valuable on-site experience through work placements. With the support of his tutors and a clear goal of securing an apprenticeship, he is already taking important steps. These steps will help him move towards a successful future in construction after completing his bricklaying course at Bradford College.

“I’ve been really enjoying it so far,” Bradley said. “Originally, I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to do Bricklaying or Joinery, but I’m really glad I chose bricklaying.”

Developing Confidence at Bradford College

His tutors have played a key role in his experience, helping him feel supported and confident throughout the course. Bradley describes the college as a welcoming environment where he feels comfortable to learn and develop his skills. “It’s been great coming here. Phil and Ian support me a lot during lessons, and I feel really comfortable and safe at Bradford College.”

Gaining Real Experience on Placement

A key highlight of Bradley’s course has been his industry placement, where he completed a full week on site with Morgan Sindall. During his placement, he worked alongside experienced professionals and adapted to new environments. Moreover, he gained real insight into the industry. The experience helped him build confidence while developing valuable connections. This included contacts at Marlborough.

Building Skills for the Future

When reflecting on the most rewarding part of his course, Bradley points to the progress he has made. He also values the skills he has developed along the way. “I’d say achieving my Level 2 qualification, learning how to lay different types of bricks and getting real experience on site has been the most rewarding part. It’s been great to see how much I’ve improved.”

Taking the Next Step

Looking ahead, Bradley is focused on securing an apprenticeship. He is already taking steps to make that happen. “After my work experience, I’ve made some contacts, so I’m planning to reach out and hopefully turn that into an apprenticeship.”

A Positive and Rewarding Experience

Bradley describes his time at Bradford College as a positive and rewarding experience. He has not only developed his practical skills but has also grown in confidence. Bradley has gained independence and pushed himself to take on new challenges both in the workshop and on site. With the support of his tutors, he has built both his ability and self-belief. Now he prepares for the next step in his journey into the construction industry.
