Driven to Learn: Franck’s Adult Learning Story

Bradford College’s Adult Learning Motor Vehicle Engineering Level 1 course has given Franck Djedje the chance to build practical skills, grow in confidence, and prove that it’s never too late to learn something new — an achievement recognised when he was named Adult Learner of the Year (Engineering).

At Bradford College, adult learners come with different goals, but a shared determination to grow. For Franck, returning to education has been both a challenge and an opportunity to develop knowledge that he believes everyone should have.

Overcoming Language Barriers and New Challenges

Originally from the Comoros and fluent in French, Franck came to the UK and learned English along the way. Returning to education as an adult brought its challenges, especially studying in a second language, but his passion and perseverance have carried him through.

“I found it challenging at first,” Franck says, “but very interesting. For me, motor engineering is knowledge that everybody should have. It’s like reading, writing, or using a computer. If you have a car, you should understand how it works.”

Turning a Personal Goal into a Passion

Franck decided to join Bradford College to gain a better understanding of car maintenance as he plans to buy his own vehicle. What began as a personal goal has sparked a deeper interest in the motoring world, even opening up the possibility of a future career in a garage.

Balancing Study, Work and Family Life

What makes Franck’s adult learning story even more inspiring is how he balances his studies with a full-time night job and family life.

“When you really want to do something, you find the time for it,” he says. His determination is clear – he is committed to building a better future for himself while being a proud father.

Supportive Teaching That Makes a Difference

A key part of Franck’s positive experience has been the support he’s received at Bradford College. He speaks warmly about his teachers, Sarah Lee and Ahjaz Khan, whose guidance has made a real difference to his adult learning.

“I have been very, very lucky to have two very, very good teachers,” Franck explains. “They really want to help you. When you struggle, they are there. They are passionate, and that makes it easier to understand and learn. I’m very grateful to them.”

Recognition for Outstanding Achievement

Franck’s dedication and positive attitude have not gone unnoticed. At the beginning of May, he was awarded Adult Learner of the Year (Engineering Award) at Bradford College’s Star Awards.

His tutors praised both his academic commitment and his impact on those around him:

“Franck is an outstanding candidate for a Star Award. Although English is not his first language, he demonstrates remarkable dedication by consistently taking detailed notes and striving to understand every aspect of the course. His positive attitude shines through every day – he is always smiling, supportive, and a friend to everyone in the group. Franck’s commitment is further shown through his impeccable 100% attendance and his constant effort to do his very best. His enthusiasm, determination, and warm presence make him an exceptional role model within the class.”

Embracing Lifelong Learning

For Franck, returning to education isn’t just about gaining knowledge, it’s about embracing a mindset of lifelong learning.

“We never finish learning,” he says. “There is no age limit. I’m over 50 and still learning. That’s the most rewarding part.”

A Welcoming Place to Learn

Living just a short distance from the College made Bradford an easy choice, but it’s the teaching, support, and welcoming environment that have made his experience truly worthwhile.

Advice for Future Adult Learners

His advice to others thinking about taking that first step into adult learning?

“My experience has been very good. I would definitely recommend it. With teachers like the ones I have, you will succeed if you are willing to make the effort.”
