Hamzah’s interest in computing began long before college, driven by hands-on experimentation and creativity. He recalls, “In Year 8, I developed an Android application using App Inventor and created a basketball hoop game, which I later presented at a school event.” That early experience sparked a clear ambition: “From that point onwards, my interest in developing systems and programming continued to grow, and I realised this was the career path I wanted to pursue.”

With support from Bradford College, Hamzah successfully progressed to the University of Leeds. “I achieved D*D*D*, which meant I exceeded the entry requirements,” he says.
He chose Leeds for its reputation and opportunities: “Being a Russell Group university and one of the top in the UK made it a great place to continue developing my skills.”
The transition felt manageable thanks to his college experience. “Bradford College gave me a strong understanding of coursework, project delivery, and time management, which were essential at university,” he adds.
Excelling at University
Hamzah’s strong foundation paid off quickly. “The coding skills I developed at college helped me perform confidently at university—I achieved 94% in Procedural Programming in my first year,” he says.
He went on to graduate with a First-Class degree in Computer Science, reflecting on his success: “I genuinely believe this would not have been possible without the support and guidance from my teachers at Bradford College.”
Building a Career in Software Engineering
Today, Hamzah works as a Software Engineer at the Ministry of Justice, where he develops and improves large-scale digital services. “I work on systems used by caseworkers, solicitors, barristers and judges, helping to manage financial remedy cases,” he explains.
He enjoys solving complex challenges and making a meaningful impact: “I enjoy analysing technical challenges, improving systems, and finding efficient solutions.”
His role also allows him to give back, as he supports and mentor’s newer developers while continuing to grow professionally.

Looking back at his time at Bradford College studying Software Development Extended Diploma Level 3, Hamzah takes pride in how far he has come. “I’m proud of progressing from a student with an interest in technology to working professionally as a Software Engineer within a major government department,” he says.
