Breaking Barriers in Engineering: Umaiyah’s STAR Award Success

Choosing a Course That Opens Doors

For Umaiyah, choosing a T Level in Engineering and Manufacturing Design has been a step towards new opportunities and real success. During her time on the course, she has built practical skills, grown in confidence, and even became a STAR Award winner.

Now completing her industry placement at Pressman, Umaiyah is gaining hands-on experience in CNC machining while making a strong impression in the workplace. As a woman entering the engineering industry, she is also proud to challenge stereotypes and inspire others. She is a strong example of how the right support and determination can open real pathways into the industry.

“I was approached by Michael, who told me about the Engineering and Manufacturing Design course and explained the opportunities it could lead to,” Umaiyah explained. “I saw it as a way to get more opportunities, and it really has. I’m now on placement at Pressman and have even won a STAR Award.”

Why Bradford College Felt Like the Right Fit

When it came to choosing where to study, Bradford College felt like a natural choice.

“I chose Bradford College because most of my family studied here, including my brother who’s also in engineering. I wanted to follow in his footsteps, and it already felt like a familiar, comfortable environment.”

Gaining Real Experience at Pressman

Umiyah’s industry placement at Pressman has been a key highlight of her course, giving her the chance to develop real, hands-on skills in a supportive environment. From the start, she felt welcomed and guided through different areas of the business, quickly settling into a role and building strong relationships with her colleagues.

Now working in CNC machining, she’s gained valuable experience and confidence. “When I first went there, I met Matt, an amazing manager, who talked to me through everything,” she said. “I’ve learnt so much, I’ve got along really well with everyone and there are so many opportunities. They’ve even given me my own toolbox, so I’m genuinely so happy there.”

Building Confidence in Engineering

Being a woman in STEM is something Umiyah is proud to represent, and it has played a big role in building her confidence.

“I feel like I’ve broken stereotypes, especially with my background and how I present myself. I’ve been through a lot, and getting into engineering has really empowered me. I feel like I can now be a role model for anyone thinking about coming into this industry.”

Celebrating Success at the STAR Awards

Winning a STAR Award was a very proud moment for Umaiyah, especially as it pushed her outside of her comfort zone. Although she initially felt nervous due to her anxiety, seeing a friend go up inspired her to take that step herself, turning it into a positive and memorable experience.

“I was really scared at first, but seeing my friend go up gave me the confidence to do the same. I went up, got my award, took a photo, and it ended up being amazing.”

Receiving the award brought a strong sense of achievement and pride in how far she has come.

“I felt accomplished, like I achieved what I wanted, and I was really happy.”

Looking Ahead to the Future

Umiyah describes her time at Bradford College as truly life changing. She has built strong friendships, developed supportive relationships with her teachers, and found an environment where she feels comfortable and motivated to succeed, especially as a woman in engineering.

Looking ahead, she plans to progress onto Level 4, continue through to Level 6, and ultimately build a career in engineering. For anyone considering a similar path, her advice is clear: keep pushing yourself, take every opportunity, and always look for ways to improve.
