Bradford College to the Royal Air Force
Harry Garside always knew he wanted a career in the Armed Forces and Bradford College helped him turn that ambition into reality.
After choosing to study Uniformed Public Services at Bradford College, Harry completed both Level 2 and Level 3 Certificates, gaining valuable insight into life in the military while preparing for the Royal Air Force (RAF) application process. The course helped him build the discipline, confidence and understanding needed to take the next step into service life.
Now serving as an aircraft mover in the RAF, Harry travels the world supporting military and humanitarian operations. Despite his global role, he regularly returns to Bradford College to share his experiences and inspire current Uniformed Public Services students.
Support That Made the Difference
Harry is open about the impact his tutor, Gary Maindonald, had during his time at college.
“The Level 2 and Level 3 certificates didn’t directly lead me into the RAF, but the support from Gary Maindonald made a real difference. His experience as an ex-British Army solider helped me understand the application and training process, and he was very supportive of the time I needed away from college to complete it.”
Learning from someone with real military experiences gave Harry confidence and clarity. Gary’s understanding of service life – and his flexibility during the RAF application process – allowed Harry to focus fully on pursing his goals.
“Gary’s support during my application process made a huge difference. He gave me the time and understanding I needed to balance college work with my RAF application, and his military experience really helped shape my decision to join. He encouraged me to push myself and think seriously about my future in the Armed Forces.”
Choosing a Career in the RAF
Harry chose the Royal Air Force because it offered a clear route into the career he wanted, whilst the RAF offers many different trades, the role of aircraft mover stood out as the best fit for his interests of moving from location to location.
His journey began with Basic Recruit Training, followed by specialist Movements Training and a final conversion course. Each stage built the foundations needed for the role, with skills and confidence continuing to grow through hands-on experience in operational units such as UKMAMS or AMS.
“My role with UKMAMAS involves moving freight, vehicles and equipment to support RAF operations worldwide. As the frontline of RAF logistics, we transport everything from helicopters and tanks to humanitarian aid, supporting major military operations and emergency evacuations across the globe.”
Harry describes his current posting at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus as his most memorable so far. Influenced by ongoing global events, the role has brought added challenges and complexity – but this has also made the work more engaging and rewarding, reinforcing why he enjoys being part of such a dynamic operational environment.
Skills That Transfer Beyond the Classroom
Being part of the RAF has helped Harry develop a wide range of valuable skills, particularly time management and people skills. He credits the Uniformed Public Services course at Bradford College with helping him build strong organisational habits.
“The Uniformed Public Services course involved detailed coursework, often with tight deadlines, which helped us stay organised and manage our time effectively. These are skills I’ve been able to carry directly into my career in the Armed Forces.”
Harry also highlights the importance of being able to work well with others in military life.
“Strong people skills are essential in the Armed Forces, where you work with individuals from many different backgrounds. Being able to communicate well and adapt helps you fit in and work effectively as part of a team.”
Giving Back to Bradford College
Since joining the RAF, Harry has not only thrived in his role but has made a point of giving back. He regularly returns to Bradford College to speak with Uniformed Public Services students, offering real insight into service life – much like the guidance he received during his time on the course.
“I come back to speak to Uniformed Public Services students because I know how helpful it is to hear from someone who’s currently serving and has been through the same course. It gives students a real insight into life in the RAF and the opportunities ahead – and for me, it’s great to see people who are keen to join, knowing we might cross paths again somewhere else in the world.”
A Defining Moment
Passing out of Basic Training at RAF Halton remains one of Harry’s proudest achievements. Completing such a demanding challenge at a young age and sharing that moment with his family made all the hard work feel truly worthwhile.
Advice for Future Student
For students considering a future in the RAF, Harry’s message is clear: hard work genuinely pays off. By staying focused and determined, he secured the posting he wanted and now travels the world as part of his role – experiencing opportunities few careers can offer. As Harry explains, the RAF opens doors “that a regular job wouldn’t even think to let you do”.
