How to dress for Graduation
Graduation is a formal occasion and you must wear the appropriate academic dress (a gown, hood and cap) for the academic award you are to receive. Students without academic dress will not be able to graduate.
Make sure you have registered for Graduation before you order your gown. Registration for tickets is via the Student Portal (for eligible students only).
You can only order your academic dress, photography and certificate framing from our official partner William Northam. On their website, select ‘Graduation’ at the top of the page. Please type in your institution as ‘Bradford College’ and have your Student ID, surname and email address ready to input.
Details for all eligible graduates have been shared with William Northam to ensure you hire the right gown and hood for the right ceremony.
You must order your academic dress by the end of October 2019, please keep your receipt in a safe place as you will need this to collect your gown on the day.
The dress code for Graduation is smart/formal. Denim should not be worn. Any graduand who does not comply with the dress code may not be admitted to the ceremony. For gentlemen this should be a shirt, tie, smart trousers and shoes (not trainers). For ladies we recommend blouses, skirts, trousers, or formal dresses and shoes, or smart sandals (not casual flip-flops or mules).
On the day of Graduation you may find that it takes time to become familiar with wearing your gown, hood and cap/mortar board, therefore, it is important that the rest of your clothing and footwear are comfortable.
Please note that if you wear a turban then this will exempt you from wearing an official graduation cap. If you wear a headscarf, your graduation cap will go over the top.
Top tips: We also recommend that your shirt or blouse has buttons down the front so that you have somewhere to fasten your ‘hood’. It is also a good idea to bring some safety pins for your gown and hair grips can come in handy for fastening your cap.
International students who would like to wear their own national dress are very welcome to do so along with the gown, hood and cap/mortar board.
Returning your gown
Hired gowns should be returned to the William Northam representatives on the same day.
