The purpose of this page is to provide an indication of the types of assistive technology that you may use during your studies - whether you have the use of loan equipment (through the departments Assistive Technology Service), purchased equipment under the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), personal equipment, or want to know more about accessibility settings or how Assistive Technology can assist you in your studies.

The availability of assistive technology varies across college, primarily facilities are available within the Learning Support supported study area on Level 3 of The David Hockney Building. Certain applications are installed on all college campus PCs for any student to access.

Assistive Technology installed includes:

  • Dragon Naturally Speaking (Dragon enables users to work on their computer without relying on a keyboard or mouse e.g. to dictate text into words on-screen)
  • Texthelp Read & Write (Text to speech, highlighting, word prediction, spelling/grammar, scan documents to enable read aloud)
  • Mind View (Mind maps allow structuring thoughts in the form of a web, expanding outwards from a central point, various other features such as graphical elements are included to improve appearance)

The reading pen has helped me get ready for my exams, it has improved my understanding of spelling and grammar with the read-back function.
