It's good to talk
For most of our students, their learning journey is rewarding, and lets them achieve their aspirations. But for some students, personal and social problems can present barriers to their education.
The Student Base offers students a safe and respectful environment to talk to qualified and experienced staff about what may be troubling them. We can signpost students to relevant services when necessary but also provide opportunities for one-to-one and group work support so that students are better able to deal with the issues they are experiencing.
The Student Base provides a space for safe, respectful conversations to happen that are often difficult to have. Any conversations we have are led by the student, and the student is placed at the centre of any support that is offered. It’s good to talk, we listen and believe.
Some of the personal and social issues that the Student Base may be able to help with, either by direct support or through signposting to other relevant services, are:
- promoting positive behaviours inside College and the wider community
- relationship and family difficulties
- knowing your rights within current policy and legislation
- drug and alcohol misuse
- developing confidence and self-esteem
- general well-being
- being in a safe and respectful relationship or friendship
- developing coping strategies and building resilience
- community issues
We can also support students to access various community activities and opportunities, such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, youth services, volunteering in the community, and other training and development opportunities.
The Student Base is located on the ground floor of the David Hockney Building.
