WorldSkills UK computing contest returns to Bradford College

Hamza Kumran collects his award for winning the Yorkshire heat of the WorldSkills UK IT contest in 2018

Yorkshire’s most talented computing and IT students are set to battle it out in the regional heats of a national skills contest that will be held at Bradford College.

More than 30 students and apprentices from colleges across the region are set to compete in the Yorkshire heats of WorldSkills UK’s IT Software Solutions for Business contest, which will be hosted by the college on Friday, May 3.

The contestants will be vying to secure themselves a place in the national finals at WorldSkills UK LIVE in November.

Steven Clay, Lecturer in Networking and Systems Support at Bradford College, said: “WorldSkills competitions are the gold standard of skills excellence. They inspire young competitors to reach new heights, helping them turn their passion into a profession.

“We hosted the heats at Bradford College last year and are excited to be doing so again in 2019.

“We will have 12 of our own students taking part, some of whom are studying at Further Education level, some are apprentices and others are on degree-level IT courses at our University Centre.

“Last year two of our students successfully made it through to the finals in Birmingham and it would be wonderful to have Bradford College represented in this year’s final too. I offer my best wishes to all those taking part in the competition and wish them the very best of luck.”

The WorldSkills UK competitions involve a series of tests designed to enable the students and apprentices to build on their knowledge and showcase their employability skills. The competitions also enable colleges and employers to benchmark their courses, raising standards across the UK. The IT Software Solutions for Business competitions focuses on all the essential requirements for a successful career as a Microsoft Applications Specialist, working in the IT department of any organisation.

The Yorkshire heat is the first of 11 heats that will take place across the UK up until the end of June before the best are invited to compete in the national final at the NEC in Birmingham in November as part of WorldSkills UK LIVE.

Bradford College offers a full range of computing courses, from apprenticeships up to degrees. Full details can be found on the college website, by calling 01274 433 333 or by attending the next open event on Saturday, July 6
