How Bradford College’s work experience gets students ready for employment

Why is work experience important?

Work experience is vital to help our students get the knowledge, skills and attitude they need to be ready for employment. Our work placements are a key part of Bradford College’s support package to help learners make the most of their time here.

I gained work experience with Wigs Up North in Manchester, an absolutely amazing set of women! And then I also worked on Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake when it was on tour in Manchester for two weeks with wig mistress Lisa Champion. I even got to paint some of the swans.

My placement at Travel with Kare gave me a real insight into how an independent travel agency is run. This experience allowed me to engage with customers directly, which meant I could put into practice the customer service skills that I learnt from my Bradford College tutors.

How it works

We work closely with employers to offer professional placements and work experience opportunities, which are mandatory on many of our courses, giving our learners hands-on experience of the world of work. As a result, they are much better equipped to get a job they want and build their career, or to progress onto Higher Education.

Each year, some of our catering students attend a residential week working at The Ritz in London.

We have a massive employer engagement. I bring in Chefs on Thursday nights, to host workshops, and we’ve had students at The Ritz, The Dorchester, The Box Tree. We’re very fortunate - all students that started this year have either gained employment or changed jobs to a higher-level kitchen.

What we offer

Exciting industry placements have included public services (West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue) and retail (Debenhams); hotel and restaurant takeovers at Holiday Inn and The Cow on the Hill restaurant; and summer school at the University of Bradford.

The placement is brilliant! You’re dealing with real patients and real situations, so you’re able to apply everything we learn in class on placement.

Our students loved their networking events and work experience!

"There are not many events that cater for special effects, so we make the most of [The Prosthetics Event]. It’s just another great way of networking. You never know where it might lead you, if they like you and see some ambition."
Ellie Gribble (student, Media Make-up with Special Effects)

Students from our Hospitality and Travel Management, Travel and Tourism, and Engineering courses came together to hear all about career opportunities at Jet2.com from their Brand Champion, Amanda Kay. "She’s opened my eyes to the different roles within Jet2.com. She speaks from experience, so it’s the best knowledge you can get." Jodie Ellis (student, Hospitality and Travel Management)

"All the students go out for work placements as well as working in The Grove Restaurant – Bradford College’s in-house training restaurant. Out there, they’re stood on their own two feet. And from these work experiences, there’s the potential to get a job at the place where you work." Richard Barker (Food and Beverages Manager, The Grove Restaurant)

Students are more employable when they’ve been on work experience. With us, they do hospitality training, they work event nights, go on placement… Our students leave College with the invaluable work experience that employers look for.
