IT trio triumph in computing skills contest

Dan Blake, centre, is presented with his winner's certificate by Toby Bell of Northumberland College and Anita Lall at Bradford College.

Three computing students from Bradford College have triumphed in a regional skills contest.

Sami Ejaz, Dan Blake and Hamza Kumran each finished first in their respective disciplines in the Yorkshire heat of the WorldSkills UK IT competition.

Sami, who is studying a level three BTEC course in Software Development, took top spot in the IT Software Solutions for Business category.

It was effectively a Bradford College one, two, three in the latter category with Jahangir Khan and Hayden Steele, who are both apprentices with City Training Services, Bradford College’s apprenticeship provider, taking second and third place respectively.

Steve Clay, Lecturer in Networking and Systems Support at Bradford College, said: “The competition was a wonderful experience for all of those involved and while challenging, students were able to demonstrate their analytical thinking skills to solve problems they are likely to encounter once they enter the IT Industry.

“Students were tested on a range of skills from connecting PCs to a domain, troubleshooting connectivity problems on a network and wireless systems through to designing and implementing spreadsheet solutions using Microsoft Excel.”

The three winning students now face an anxious wait, until the scores from all other regional heats are in, to discover if they have made it through to the national finals at the NEC in Birmingham in November.

Anyone interested in studying a computing or IT course at Bradford College is encouraged to come along to the next open event, on Saturday, 6 July between 11 am and 2 pm. Places can be booked via the college website or HERE.
