Angus Bell, Level 2 Sports student at Bradford College, recently returned from competing at the Dragonboat World Nations Championships in Thailand.
In June, Angus was attending the Saltaire Dragonboat Festival as a spectator when the Bradford College boat needed a few extra rowers. He explains: "Just to make up the numbers I in the boat and I got hooked!". Fortunately, the GB team were at the event and thought Angus would make a perfect fit for the team. "They looked to me and said they wanted more fresh faces for the team, I went to the first training session for a try-out and that was it."
Angus hasn’t looked back since that fateful day in Saltaire, and this summer he was part of the GB Dragonboat team in Thailand at the World Nations Championships. The competition is the biggest event in the annual Dragonboat calendar and also provided a culturally eye-opening experience to Angus: "I was over there for 2 and a bit weeks, a week to acclimatise, a week of racing and then a couple of days to enjoy it. It’s so different from over here, the culture is amazing … the water over there is different from over here, there’s something about it that is completely different, and it’s quite surreal."
Angus’ involvement in the GB Dragonboat team inspired him to join Bradford College and enrol onto a Sports course, moving over from Leeds City College where he was on a different career path studying Computer Science. "If you looked at me five years ago you would have thought Computer Science, I was the kid sitting out of PE at school due to Asthma, now I’m doing a sports course and travelling the world competing in Sports."
Studying at Bradford College is also providing Angus with benefits for his Dragonboat ambitions as well as his aims to be a Sports coach: "part of our course is health and nutrition, that’s key to Dragonboat racing … the teachers are teaching me that Sport is adaptable into my coaching ambitions which is also ideal in a Dragonboat situation as we all help each other."
