Organisations join forces to widen participation in higher education

Bradford College will host an event aimed at widening participation to higher education

Leaders from across the district will join with universities and colleges to push for wider participation in higher education at a special event taking place at Bradford College.

The widening participation event, which will be opened by the leader of Bradford Council, Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, takes place at Bradford College’s Dye House Gallery on 22 March.

The event has been organised for teachers, youth workers, development workers or anyone working with young people. It will see seven key organisations coming together to see how more pupils from disadvantaged or under-represented backgrounds in Bradford can get in to higher education.

The event will also look at ways in which organisations can involve young people in volunteering opportunities that offer them key skills.

The event has been organised by Bradford Council’s Bradford Pathways and Bradford College working with partner organisations as part of the Bradford Education Covenant. The partners involved include Go Higher West Yorkshire, National Citizen Service, University of Bradford, Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership and Queens' College Cambridge.

The organisations taking part will share best practice and discuss how they can support colleagues in schools and sixth forms and youth workers to help Bradford young people to succeed. Each of the organisations will explain what they do to help widen participation in higher education before a series of workshops will be held.

Cllr Imran Khan, portfolio holder for education, employment and skills, said: “We want all our young people to have the opportunity to make the most of their education so they can succeed in life. This event is an important way of sharing the best ways we can provide the right pathways into further and higher education, and open volunteering opportunities to young people. It shows the benefit of our Education Covenant in bringing partners together to raise educational aspirations for our district.”
