Generous students at an adult education college have donated £500 to a foodbank.
Students at Forster College raised money for the Bradford Central Foodbank through tuck shop sales of sweets, snacks and drinks.
The donation is on top of monthly gifts of hampers put together by students and staff at the college in Little Germany.
Chris Baillie, Forster College Manager, presented the cash donation to a grateful Laura-Jo Sanby, who works at the foodbank.
“Forster College is proud to support this vital charity,” said Chris.
“Many of our students receive benefits and live in some of the most deprived areas of the city so are aware of the essential help offered by the foodbank and so are keen to offer their support as and when they can.
“Throughout the year we have a collection basket in our reception where staff and students put food and toiletries and we deliver that every month to the foodbank.
“The college has also become a referral agent for the foodbank, which means we can issue vouchers to students in need, which can be exchanged for a food parcel at the foodbank. These have been of great benefit to many of our students who have been affected by benefit changes, homelessness or other issues.”
Laura-Jo, from the foodbank which is based in the Light Centre on Captain Street in the city centre, said: “We are so, so grateful for the donations from the college as we see more and more local families each week. Without the foodbank most of these families wouldn't have been able to eat. We are only able to carry on issuing food parcels because of the generosity of people like the students at Forster College. Each week we give away about £1000 worth of food so the monthly hampers are a big help towards that. The cash raised is such a blessing and means we can help more local families. Thank you to everyone who has helped to raise this.
