Bradford Tech Week: Shape the future

An innovative generation of bright young minds is invited to discover the future today with Bradford Tech Week.

This week (18-22 October 2021), Bradford College is joining forces with the University of Bradford, Bradford Council and a whole host of other organisations to help young people find out more about careers in this rapidly growing sector.

Nick Scaife, Head of Work Experience and Industry Placements at Bradford College, said: “The main aim of Bradford Tech Week is to highlight careers in the technology field. We will look at current trends in the area as well as looking at what kinds of jobs will dominate in the future.

“A lot of people don’t realise how wide and varied the tech sector is. There are so many opportunities out there for students and we want them to become involved and help shape its future.”

Activity across Bradford

The college is encouraging students to join activities set up by organisations across the district.

The Future Transformation Tech Talks offer inspirational talks from technology and digital graduates. People can also learn new skills and discover career opportunities in tech. The University of Bradford has given a series of fascinating talks on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The site highlights how people working in the tech sector are not only at the forefront of an innovative and exciting sector but they are also making a difference to people’s lives. Anmol Bassra, a delivery specialist at supermarket giant Morrisons, discusses how the company has adapted to the post-Covid world. He talks about how technology has supported the entire community, in particular the most vulnerable and those who are self-isolating.

Space Hub Yorkshire engages with students to embed space skills in the region. It offers teaching resources, talks and activities. Students are challenged to escape the International Space Station, take a tour of the Earth and take part in many more activities for all ages.

Develop Skills for the Tech Sector with Bradford College

This week, Bradford College is also highlighting how its courses can help young people get into this sector. The BA (Hons) Games and Graphic Media Design is ideal for people who want to influence the design of games and graphics. The UK gaming market is worth a record £5.7bn – partly thanks to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite. So a career in this industry could offer lots of opportunities for development and growth as well as allowing students to unleash their innovation and creativity.

Bradford College also has a huge range of Computer Science, IT and Gaming courses, from entry level to degree courses. This offers the chance to progress through different levels to achieve an outstanding qualification preparing tech wizards for an exciting career in the sector. It has state-of-the-art IT rooms and games workshops with the same kit used by industry professionals.

Bradford College students also have the chance to take part in and competitions such as Worldskills.

Future Technologies Centre

Another initiative supporting young people into the careers sector is the Future Technologies Centre. This is a new education, research and training framework designed by Bradford College to prepare students to develop the skills and qualifications for careers in the industries for the future.

The college has joined forces with employers to develop a number of hubs for specific industries including sustainable transport, sustainable construction and allied and medical health technology. Hubs for the digital, sustainable science and engineering sectors are planned.

As well as enabling students to access and train with the latest technology, the centre aims to future-proof jobs for young people in Bradford, create a greener future and inspire a generation.
