Course Overview

This course offers you a flexible programme of academic study to develop and improve your role in an educational setting, in either a primary or secondary school or in a college or other post compulsory organisation.   

We have designed varied routes so you can develop the skills and knowledge appropriate to your context, role and interests. The intention is that by working together we will help you to achieve your goals.

Course Structure

You will spend one day each week in College and a minimum of two days equivalent study in your educational setting. Time spent in an educational setting may be on a paid or voluntary basis and it is your responsibility to arrange this placement.  A strong element of work-based learning ensures that your studies directly apply to your practice in education.

By the end of the course you will be able to:
 

  • Appreciate the variety of roles played by professionals and practitioners in education and become better in your own role
  • Develop personal skills and a broad understanding of education
  • Identify your own place and contribution to education
  • Develop the personal and professional skills to make that contribution
  • Understand and contribute to current national initiatives.

Modules Covered

Sessions are delivered one day per week with Core Modules in the afternoon, Subject Modules (Mathematics, Language and Science) in the morning and Modules aimed at supporting special needs and pastoral care for secondary and post-compulsory staff in the evening.  The routes can be mixed if this is what you require to enhance your role.

Learning Methods

You will require a mentor in your setting to support and guide you.  The teaching team will also observe you working in your organisation and offer developmental guidance.  Specific Modules will also involve workplace-based assessment tasks which from time to time may require you to be away from your normal responsibilities.  You will also visit and observe practitioners within your institution and in other settings.  A personal tutor will offer you support and guidance along with the course tutor and team.

Teaching Methods

Teaching is as interactive as possible, allowing you to fully participate in sessions.  You will work with a group of students throughout the course which will enable you to develop strong, supportive relationships.  Tutors will require you to reflect on your practice and contribute to all sessions.

Assessment

Each Module has its own unique assessment, which can take many forms including essays, presentations, or portfolios. These will draw upon your experience and knowledge. You will be briefed by your module tutor on the Module assessment and will receive support and guidance for its completion.

Work Placement/Fieldwork

From time to time, specific work-based tasks will require time away from your normal roles and responsibilities, and you will perhaps work in other settings within your institution. You may therefore need to negotiate time away from the workplace.

What's Next?

This Foundation Degree provides you with 240 credit points of Undergraduate study to help you pursue further qualifications eg Honours degree level, Qualified Teacher Status, or to apply for promoted support posts in schools or colleges such as HLTA, cover supervisor or mentor.

You could progress to the BA (Hons) Supporting Learning in Education or the BA (Hons) Teaching and Learning in the Primary Phase to become a primary teacher.

This course enables you to work alongside others who work in a similar role but in a wide range of educational organisations and sectors.

Entry Requirements

48 UCAS tariff points, with three other subjects at GCSE level.

Entry is normally at Level 1 with appropriate A level or equivalent qualifications in childcare and/or education eg BTEC National Diploma, NVQ 3 for Teaching Assistants or Childcare, Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) or Accredited Access course.


You may seek admission with Advanced Standing or Accreditation of Prior certificated Learning or Experience (APEL).
You will be interviewed as part of the selection procedure.


A satisfactory Enhanced CRB disclosure and health check are also required.
