The BSc Sports and Physical Activity Top-up caters to the higher level skill needs of candidates seeking employment in the competitive sporting industry. You will develop your academic knowledge and critical interpretation of topics that affect the sport and physical activity sector as well as being prepared for external qualifications required for positions in the sector. Also, with a full Honours degree you will be able to take further postgraduate qualifications, including those required for a career in teaching.
This one year, full-time route is Stage Three of the degree course. To study on this course you must have completed Stage One and Stage Two for example, a Foundation degree.
You can study part-time over two years for the Top-up degree.
The BSc Sports and Physical Activity Top-Up forms a coherent package with either the FdSc in Physical Activity, Health & Well-being or the FdSc Sports Coaching offered by the College, reiterating the curriculum's emphasis on local employment opportunities.
Five Modules (including a double credit Dissertation module) will form 80 credits in year One and 40 in Year Two.
You will cover a number of Core Modules, including:

- Sports & Physical Activity Research Methods
- Contemporary Issues in Sport & Physical Activity
The course focuses on the amalgamation of theory and practice, in order to enhance your transferable key skills and employability qualities.
In addition to the practical aspect of the course, theoretical information will be delivered via lectures, student-led seminars and workshops, visits, tutorials, computer assisted learning and group work. There will also be the opportunity to learn from guest speakers and attend related course events.
As a body of staff, we take pride in our links with the industry, due to our roles as sports coaches, personal fitness trainers, cardio-rehab advisers, sports practitioners, fitness consultants and sports development officers. This versatile portfolio means that we are able to support you in your studies, irrespective of your specific niche or area of interest.
You will be assessed through a combination of formative and summative assignments, in order to structure your development and ensure your consistent academic progression. Formative assessments may be measured through case studies, presentations, discussions and contribution to forums on Moodle. This variation maintains support where it is needed.
Summative assessments will be delivered via reports, essays, examinations and presentations, as well as practical assessments.
There is an expectation amongst employers that students will graduate with a range of industry recognised qualifications, principally NGB (National Governing Bodies) awards. To this end, the course will prepare students for NGBs by teaching elements of the curriculum, providing opportunities to practice skills and gain experience, make available appropriate equipment and provide accessible courses in terms of location and affordability, rendering employment in the competitive sector more viable.
The course has a strong focus on employability, offering a route into the industry for inexperienced students, or opportunity for promotion for those already working in the sport and active leisure sector.
You will graduate with a full degree and can then progress onto a postgraduate programme of Higher Education such as a PGCE for teacher training or masters programmes if your grades are as required.
Applicants with the following qualifications and /or experience may be admitted to the programme:
Higher National Diploma (HND) or Foundation Degree (FdA) in a sports and physical activity related area or other relevant subject normally with a merit profile or an overall average of 50% in year 2.
Five years relevant experience in the sports and fitness sector will also qualify you for consideration. It is likely that applicants will also hold a Level 5 qualification; failing this, you will be required to demonstrate your academic skill via a piece of written work.
The programme caters for a range of entry qualifications and experience. Applications from people with relevant experience are actively encouraged. All applicants are invited to contact the Admissions Office or the Course Tutor for guidance and informal discussion. All prospective students meeting the criteria will be invited for interview.
Admission onto the scheme is, in general, based on the academic judgement that the applicant has a reasonable expectation of successful completion of the award, and is likely to benefit in terms of personal development and enhanced career prospects. Applicants will be required to produce evidence of their ability to benefit from HE level study. Applicants may be required to submit a piece of written work as part of their application, or take a diagnostic assessment of their written communication skills.
Applications from those who can demonstrate substantial relevant work experience, but may not hold the specified qualifications, will also be considered.
