Course Overview

Subject Knowledge Enhancement Courses are for graduates intending to teach Biology; Chemistry; Computer Science; Design Technology (Food and Textiles); English; French; Geography; Mathematics; Physics; Spanish. Their purpose is to enhance subject knowledge and understanding before an Initial Teacher Training Course. The courses are aimed at graduates who wish to gain Qualified Teacher status (QTS) but do not meet PGCE entry requirements due to insufficient subject knowledge and career changers who would like to improve their subject knowledge prior to the PGCE. Design Technology (Food and Textiles) will deliver and develop skills and knowledge in Food (75%) and Textiles (25%).

More information about the Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics courses can be found at http://bradford.vidlearn6.co.uk/.

Course Structure

For Chemistry and Physics students there is an option to complete an online Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course followed by a two week Summer School in June to enhance practical laboratory skills. There is some flexibility in start and end dates according to individual needs.

SKE courses are suitable for both core and school direct trainees.

Modules Covered

SKE courses are suitable for both core and Schools Direct trainees.

Learning Methods

The courses are modular. Modules will be delivered using blended learning with online and face to face components. Each module will have an assessment which could be an examination, laboratory report, presentation, question paper, poster or essay/project.

Teaching Methods

Each participant completes an individual development portfolio which will act both as a tool for monitoring and tracking their progress and to provide evidence at the end of the course for them to take to the ITT Institution in which they intend to complete their training.

Assessment

A mixture of assignments, assessed presentations, examinations and other forms of assessment are used, varying with each Unit.

Work Placement/Fieldwork

Work placements will be within a secondary school.

What's Next?

If you are interested in SKE courses as a route towards Initial Teacher Education you need to apply through UCAS Teacher Training for the Initial Teacher Education course of your choice, mentioning your willingness to undertake a relevant enhancement course in the personal statement.

Additional Costs

All SKEs are fully funded by the National College for Teaching and Learning (NCTL) and consequently there are no tutorial fees to pay.  For UK students and eligible EU students a small bursary is payable fixed with a 90% attendance requirement.

Entry Requirements

You must have been offered a place on a relevant Initial Teacher Education route conditional on first taking and satisfactorily completing a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course.
