This programme is suitable for anyone with a strong interest in, and a passion for, exercise and fitness. It is run over four semesters and meets the appropriate National Occupational Standards and Key Skills for the sector.
You will undertake modules in exercise and fitness as well as personal and professional development, as the course is designed to foster lifelong learning in its participants. The course was originally designed in consultation with some of the industry's leading professional bodies including Fitness Industry Association, SkillsActive, Sports Coach UK, David Lloyd Leisure, Bradford Bulls and Northern Fitness & Education. Students will benefit from lectures and support from staff with extensive experience of working in the fitness industry, in conjunction with work placements during both years of the course.
Applications are welcome from people currently working in the fitness industry or those with a keen enthusiasm to develop themselves in this field.
Modules are: Applied Exercise Teaching (Gym and Group), Foundations in Nutritional Advice and Nutrition for Fitness Health and Disease, Physiology, Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing and also for Health and Disease, Work Based Learning and Professional Practice 1 and 2. A work placement is undertaken in both years of study.
A variety of teaching and learning methods are used including: lectures, seminars, workshops, practical sessions, individual, small and large groupwork, discussions, student-centred and distance learning. Additionally there is a work experience element to the course in both years. A number of modules and assessment methods are attached to the work experience, making it a central part of the course.
Our methods include: home study, workshops, lectures, seminars, practicals and work-based learning. The Professional Development modules allow you to identify claims for prior learning and experience (APL/APEL), develop key skills and to gain some essential study skills.

- Presentations (individual and group).
The work placement element takes place during both years of your course. The placements will be set up by you, with the approval of the organisation, and the course tutor. The aim is for you to gain an invaluable insight into the industry and to apply various modules of the course in a practical setting.
This Foundation Degree will prepare you for employment within the health and fitness industry, and/or for progression onto a one-year top up to gain a full Honours degree.

The college has a wide range of sport, exercise and fitness facilities which include a 1,000 sq metre sports hall, fitness testing suite and dedicated sport theory room, aerobics and dance studio, gym, multi-use games area, two basketball courts, three 5-a-side pitches and a full size football pitch.
As part of a professional team delivering exercise and physical activity sessions you will need to dress appropriately. This will require you to have sports clothing and footwear which is suitable for the many different roles you will be asked to undertake. Additional qualifications will be made available to you during the course and there will usually be a cost involved - but they will not be an essential part of the course.
36-64 UCAS tariff points with one of the following: A levels, an Advanced GNVQ, AVCE, NVQ, BTEC or other Level 3 vocational qualification in a related subject and GCSE Grade A-C in Mathematics, English and Physical Education or a Science based topic or equivalent.

Gym Instructor and Personal Trainer qualifications are desirable although not essential.
Mature students may not need formal qualifications but must be able to demonstrate a strong interest and/or experience in exercise and fitness, as must all applicants.
You will be invited for an interview.
