Course Overview

The HNC/D in Computing (Data Analytics) is a work-related qualification for those taking their first steps into employment, or for those already in employment and seeking career development opportunities.

The School of Computing has established close links with both local business and the local community. Wherever practicable, assessment on the programme reinforces these links.

Course Structure

The course provides a blend of semesterised and year-long units. The units are sequenced to provide you with a coherent learning experience.

The HND programme has a total value of 240 credits and is equivalent to approximately 2,400 hours total learning time.

Throughout the programme emphasis will be placed upon reflection, analysis, environmental impact, critical thinking and personal development.

Teaching Methods

The teaching strategy is designed to supplement your existing knowledge and to encourage your acquisition of new subject knowledge while supporting you in the move towards a greater degree of independence and self-direction.

Assessment

Assessments may include elements of:

  • Examinations, both open and closed book
  • Reflective activities where you look back over your experiences, analyse them with the assistance of relevant theory and reflective tools, and learn from the experience

  • Plans (eg action plans, plans for your group activities)

All written work related to assessments will be submitted via Turnitin to ensure authentication of your work.

The programme provides progression into the workplace and is designed to meet employers' needs.

Additional Costs

There are no additional course costs associated with your study on this programme. All equipment is provided by the College. Students are free to purchase their own copies of books to support their studies – but all texts are available for loan from the College Library.

Entry Requirements

48 UCAS tariff points with a minimum of three GCSEs at Grade C/4-5 or above and including Mathematics and English. If you do not meet the criteria for Mathematics and English you will be invited for an interview where you will be required to sit a numeracy and literacy skills assessment.

The School of Computing welcomes applications from those who do not meet the above criteria. Where this is the case, you will be invited for an interview at which you will be expected to provide a portfolio (either physical or digital) that demonstrates professional industry experience in a Computing discipline or provides examples of computer skills appropriate to Level 4 study. You will also be required to undertake Literacy and Numeracy skills assessments along with a programming aptitude test.
