Course Overview

These courses are designed to provide opportunities for professionals working in education to reflect on their current practices with a view to improving and enhancing that practice for the benefit of those they are teaching or training. You can also undertake the MEd if you are in a support or administrative role in an educational organisation. If you have a PGCE or a Postgraduate Diploma in Education at Masters level you may be able to transfer this credit into the Masters course of your choosing.

You will plan your Masters route on an individual basis and the modules chosen will inform the title of the Award you will receive. The Core modules, taken by all students, are:

  • Professional Development which will prepare you for academic study at masters level
  • Research Methods which will enable you to develop the skills and knowledge to carry out primary research
  • Dissertation. The focus of your dissertation will be your individual choice and you will be supported by a supervisor.

 

Course Structure

The generic core encompasses all the learning outcomes for the programme to ensure that you have coverage of the necessary skills and attributes. 40 further Credits are dedicated to the core subject module for the named route and another 40 to Optional Modules.

  • Theories that Underpin Teaching and Learning
  • Understanding Autism
  • Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties
  • Designing and Developing the Curriculum.

Learning Methods

Courses are taught through a range of teaching and learning methods.  Time will be allowed for individual discussion, peer group analysis and reflective thinking.  Peer support will be encouraged and where possible use will be made of technology to assist reflection.  Depending on the routes and modules you choose, assessment methods may include: the completion of a reflective professional development portfolio, a critical analysis of current initiatives and appropriate literature, research, presentations to small groups of fellow students and written accounts relating to the appropriate modules.

Teaching Methods

Our teaching methods include: lectures, seminars, on-line support, presentations and tutorials. Depending on the routes and modules you choose, assessment methods may include: the completion of a reflective professional development portfolio, a critical analysis of current initiatives and appropriate literature, research, presentations to small groups of fellow students and written accounts relating to the appropriate modules.

Assessment

Assessment styles are varied and, depending on the route taken, include written assignments, presentations, reflective logs, portfolios and (for the Master's degree) a dissertation.

Work Placement/Fieldwork

There is no work placement associated with this programme but we expect you to draw upon your experience of professional practice.

What's Next?

These courses provide CPD opportunities for teachers and other educational professionals for whom a Master's qualification may enhance opportunities for progression or a change in work roles or contexts.  Further academic study is also possible if you wish to progress to a Doctorate award.

Entry Requirements

You should normally hold a good Honours degree or an equivalent vocational qualification and be working in an educational or education-related setting.  If you have other qualifications and/or experience, you may be considered for entry to the Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma stages, from which you can then transfer to Masters level if you are achieving at an appropriate standard.

If applicants have a masters level Diploma in Education and Training (100 or 120 credits) within the past 5 years you can be considered for a top-up route. You will complete a 20 credit Research Methods module and a 60 credit Dissertations to achieve a full Masters qualification.
