Overview
The Level 3 Diploma for Fashion Studio Assistant is approved by the University of the Arts London (UAL) and has been designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to work within the fashion industry; with a specific focus on working within a fashion studio. This course is for adults aged 19+ with wanting to gain the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to prepare you for employment and/or support a role in this industry.
The curriculum has been developed in collaboration with the British Fashion Council, Creative Skillset and representatives from industry, universities, further education colleges and employers.
This qualification is suitable for learners’ aged 18 and above. There are no specific entry requirements, although it may be beneficial if students have undertaken a level 2 qualification in an appropriate related qualification.

The course is taught by industry lead professionals to follow module briefs in a number of fashion disciplines including research, illustration, computer aided design, pattern cutting and manufacture. Teaching will be conducted in a variety of methods including constant corrective coaching, tutorials, critiques, presentations and lectures. Field trips may take place, dependant on brief, market research will also be expected to be conducted.
In order to achieve this qualification, you must successfully complete the Foundation Core and one of the Pathways. The qualification is made up of a mandatory Foundation Core and a choice of one of three pathways:
Mandatory Foundation Core: students will gain understanding, demonstrate knowledge and apply learning in the following areas in preparation for a professional context: Health and Safety in a Fashion Environment, Professional Practice in a Fashion Environment, Communication for the Fashion Industry, Introduction to the Fashion Industry, Introduction to Critical Path and Administration for the Fashion Industry.
Pathway 1 – Product Development: Studio Management for the Fashion Industry, Materials handling and application, Pattern Construction Techniques and Processes, Garment Construction Techniques for Fashion Production, Buying and Sourcing for the Fashion Industry, Product Management for the Fashion Industry.
Pathway 2 – Sales and Operations: Sales Strategies for Fashion Environments, Market Awareness for the Fashion Industry, Merchandising for Fashion Environments, Logistics for Fashion Environments, Showroom Management for Fashion Environments, Customer Relationship Management for Fashion Environments.
Pathway 3 – Fashion Marketing and Communications: Marketing and Communications Strategy for Fashion Environments, Online and Offline Brand Communication for Fashion Environments, Events Management for the Fashion Industry, Media & Influencer Relationship Management for Fashion Environments, Content Creation for the Fashion Industry.
You must be aged 19+.
There are no specific entry requirements, although it may be beneficial if students have undertaken a level 2 qualification in an appropriate related qualification. The level 3 qualification was primarily designed for individuals who are new to the industry and occupy an entry level role within the workplace. In comparison, individuals who undertake the level 4 standalone qualification are likely to be more established within the workplace, and to be using the qualification to up skill their existing capabilities.
You will be assessed through coursework.
The qualification will support students to develop a portfolio of work enabling them to progress to Higher Education in related fashion disciplines or sales and marketing. Students completing this qualification either as part of an apprenticeship or as a standalone qualification may progress to employment or Higher Education.
Employment within the Fashion Industry, specifically into roles such as a Showroom Assistant, Assistant Merchandiser, Sales Assistant, Buyers’ Assistant, Production Assistant, Communication Coordinator as well as Higher Education.
