Overview
Building Services Engineering is about the design, installation, maintenance and monitoring of the building services systems that you find in any modern domestic, commercial and industrial setting necessary for providing and maintaining ‘human comfort’ in the buildings that we live and work in.
You will also have the opportunity to complete 350 hours of relevant work experience which can give you a careers edge and fast track you into the area of construction and engineering that you are interested in. You will develop a rounded knowledge and relevant set of skills that are favoured amongst employers in this sector.
Our exciting new two-year, full-time T Level in Building Services Engineering for Construction (BSE) can lead to employment and apprenticeship opportunities within the construction industry and the within the electrical installation sector and the emerging and fast developing green and sustainable technology market.
Key Info
T Levels are split into core units and specialist units. You will learn about topics specific to the specialism giving you the opportunity to plan, perform and evaluate your work while using a range of materials, methods and techniques.
You will develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in the following: health and safety practices associated with carrying out electrotechnical systems engineering, installation methods and termination of connections, systems and products used in electrotechnical engineering, analysing and using information to and from electrotechnical systems, removal processes as part of system decommissioning.
All students will develop a general understanding of construction, including:
- Health and safety
- The science behind building design, surveying and planning
- Making accurate and appropriate measurements
- Construction methods
- Building regulations and standards
- Data management and information standards in construction
- Relationship management and customer service
- How the Internet of Things (IoT) impacts construction
- Digital engineering techniques
- Mathematical techniques to solve construction problems
- Construction design principles and processes
- The construction industry and its role in the economy
- Sustainability and the environmental impact of construction
- Business, commerce and corporate social responsibility
You will also learn about topics specific to building services engineering, including:
- Building technology principles
- Building services engineering systems
- Maintenance principles
- Tools, equipment and materials
- Electrotechnical engineering
Entry to this course requires 4 GCSEs at a grade 5 or above including Maths, English and Science or a Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installation: Buildings & Structures and Level 2 Technical Certificate in Electrical Installation.
You will complete formal assessments and examinations including employer set projects.
The 45 day industry placement allows you to develop your occupational specialism skills as well as those necessary to working in any environment, such as effective planning, working with others, health and safety and promoting equality and diversity.
Successful completion of this course can lead to employment, apprenticeships or higher education. Careers include:
