This course prepares trainee teachers to teach within the primary age range (3-11) on your chosen route; 3-7, 5-11 or 7-11 and will provide you with a PGCE at Masters level and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
The course is validated with 60 credit points at Level 7 (Masters’ level).
The course will develop your personal, professional and intellectual qualities to match those expected of a newly qualified teacher.
A strength of the course is the way in which theory and practice are related as a result of extensive time spent working with children in two placement schools. We also use our extensive contacts with local schools for day visits during the modules of the course. In addition, we have a series of visiting speakers on a variety of subjects to enhance your understanding of all aspects of primary school life and learning.
Teaching and learning methods include:
Lectures, workshops, group discussions, seminars and tutorials.
The majority of sessions are taught in groups, although individual tutorial sessions and whole cohort learning approaches are also utilised to develop knowledge and understanding of the full range of the curriculum. A number of sessions will consider activities that may be carried out in the classroom, on a particular theme, with discussions of related curricular and pedagogical issues. The course is designed to make strong links between study and reflection in College and work in school. This course is intensive and demanding, taking into account the high level of independent study expected of our postgraduate students undertaking both a professional qualification and work at Masters level.
Three assessed modules are covered, each worth 20 Credit points at Masters level.
- Module 1: Theories That Underpin Teaching and Learning
- Module 2: Teaching, Learning and Assessment
- Module 3: Educational Philosophy and Vision.
Entry to this course requires an Honours degree (at 2:2 or above) preferably relevant to the primary classroom. GCSEs at grade 4 or C or above in English Language, Maths and Science or equivalent. A satisfactory DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) and health check are also required prior to commencement of the course.
Please note that in accordance with DfE guidance, qualifications in key and functional skills at level 2 are not equivalent to GCSEs in terms of content and therefore do not meet the minimum entry requirements of the course.

Your work in College is continuously assessed. At present, formal assessment includes three assignments, one of which is in the form of a presentation and related work. Your work in school is assessed by our College tutors and trained mentors. This assessment is modeled against the national standards for Qualified Teacher Status, as stated by the TRA (Teaching Regulation Agency.
On the PGCE Primary you will spend nearly 75% of your course working with children in two placement schools.
Each placement begins with a pattern of serial days including periods of observation, work with small groups of children and the completion of school-based tasks. Serial days lead to blocks of practice with whole classes. Training must enable trainees to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to teach within the phase for which they are training.
Typically, primary training will take place across the 3-7, 5-11 or 7-11 age ranges. No training programme should cover fewer than four school years. (Initial Teacher Training criteria and supporting advice, Department for Education, March 2016).
Placements will be organised according to your chosen route, with opportunities to experience the extended Primary age range of 3-11. We have strong partnership links with local schools, whose staff make a significant contribution to your training. Partnership schools are situated in Bradford and the neighbouring LEAs to give a wide range of experience and to meet the needs of students from across the region.
The PGCE is one of the courses of Initial Teacher Training offered within the College and will equip you to work as a qualified teacher within a primary setting. We emphasise the understanding of teaching in a diverse society by preparing you to teach in a range of contexts.
