The Masters of Education pathways are flexible, professional degrees for those working in or looking to pursue a career in education settings and who want to enhance their individual or organisational practice and/or progress to a leadership role. The courses aim to support your professional development and the modules can be tailored to reflect the needs of your working context.
The programmes are designed to accommodate a range of professionals in order to promote and enhance multidisciplinary understanding. Your tutors will work alongside you as colleagues and our expectation is that peer learning and support are a key feature.
You can undertake the MEd if you are in a support or administrative role in an educational organisation. If you have a PGCE or a Postgraduate Diploma in Education at master’s level you may be able to transfer this credit into the Masters course of your choosing.
You will plan your master’s route on an individual basis and the modules chosen will inform the title of the award you will receive. The core modules, taken by all students, are:
- Professional Development (in year one of the part-time route) which will prepare you for academic study at master’s level
- Research: Practice and Planning (in year two of the part-time route) which will enable you to develop the skills and knowledge to carry out primary research
- Dissertation (in year three of the part-time route). The focus of your dissertation will be your individual choice and you will be supported by a supervisor.
The generic core encompasses all the learning outcomes for the programme to ensure that you have coverage of the necessary skills and attributes.
40 further credits are dedicated to the core subject module for the named route and another 40 to optional modules with specific recommendations made for each title.
These courses provide CPD opportunities for a range of professionals for whom a master’s qualification may enhance opportunities for progression or a change in work roles or contexts. Your future career will be built on a solid foundation of being able to research, think critically and produce written work of a very high standard.

Courses are taught using a blended approach which integrates face-to-face and online learning both in real time, in the form of a virtual class and through the college online platforms.
Sessions for the core and 40 credit point optional modules are held on three Saturdays with an additional half day if presentation is part of the assessment. Some of the module content, seminars and tutorials will be delivered online in the form of a virtual class.
Interactive learning, together with individual tutorials, provide you with relevant and appropriate understanding to develop learning and consider the impact on professional and practical skills.
The learning and teaching process are participative and you are encouraged to discuss your professional practice, enabling the development of a deeper understanding of how theory applies to practice.

Entry to this course requires an Honours degree or an equivalent vocational qualification and experience in an education-related, none medical health, youth work, social services/care settings.
If you have other qualifications and/or experience, you may be considered for entry to the Postgraduate Certificate from which you can then transfer to Masters level if you are achieving at an appropriate standard.
If you have Masters level credit from a PGCE and Post Graduate Diploma in the past 5 years this can be put towards the full Masters qualification.
Assessment methods are varied, rigorous and appropriate to the element of the award being studied. You will have the opportunity to receive feedback from formative assessments to develop your skills and confidence prior to submitting summative assessments.
Depending on the routes and modules you choose, assessment methods may include:
- Completion of a reflective professional development portfolio
- A critical analysis of current initiatives and appropriate literature
- A TED Talk and presentations to small groups of fellow students and written accounts relating to the appropriate modules
Successful completion of this course can lead to further study and employment within the Education sector.
Fees: Part-time: £5750. £1,920 per 60 credits. There is a 25% discount for those who have completed a degree with us within 5 years or whose school or college provides placements for our trainee teachers.
