  Overview

Study Film and Media Production at the world’s first UNESCO City of Film. Due to its rich filmmaking heritage and inspirational movie making locations, studying with us will place you at the heart of the filmmaking community. You will benefit from industry standard filming and editing equipment as well as expert knowledge and technique from our teaching staff. This programme will provide you with the technical and theoretical foundation to undertake a range of creative careers in the Film and Media production industry. It will challenge you to show innovation and creativity in the creation of media content, whilst developing your practical skills to complete moving image productions to a professional standard. The technical aspects will be underpinned with the theoretical and contextual knowledge required at this level, providing you with the academic skills needed to research and investigate topics relevant to your projects and productions. Finally, the requirement to complete collaborative projects and work-based experience which will provide further vocational focus to your learning, whilst giving you the opportunity to realise your own ideas and work within your own specialism. The programme is delivered by experienced practising media professionals and academics, all of whom have a wide range of skills and relevant industry experience.

This is a two year full-time course (or four years part-time) with six 120 credit modules in each academic year. This course will embrace collaborative practice and encourage student to work together across different disciplines, enabling students to create content in a number of ways. Examples of this in the past have included film projects made abroad, documentary productions, animated films and music videos. These have been made in conjunction with students from other programmes within the School of Art, including Media Make-Up and Special FX, Performing Arts, Fashion Design, Music and Graphic Design. Students are encouraged to produce work across different modules in order to develop high-quality content that embeds collaboration and creativity throughout the programme. The media production facilities are of a professional standard, giving you access to both industry standard filming and editing equipment. Our fully equipped TV studio provides the opportunity to practice and experiment with the techniques you have been taught. There are four Apple Mac suites all equipped with the full Adobe Creative suite.

Entry to this course requires 80 UCAS tariff points. As well as a minimum of two GCSE A2-level passes (or equivalent), including at least one creative subject which includes Art and Design and five GCSEs at grade 4 or C or above (or equivalent). As well as:

  • T Level qualifications are accepted, a T Level PASS with a minimum of a grade A*-C (equates to 96 UCAS points)
  • Other related Level 3 qualifications
  • An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved Further Education institution
  • Related Work Experience
  • An International Equivalent of the above

Assessment is carried out at key points during teaching. Formative assessment with either verbal and/or written feedback is offered during each module. Written feedback is provided following summative assessment. Assessment tasks are linked to the objectives of each module and are normally completed by the end of each module. Types of assessment evidence can include: assignments, projects, case study, reflective and evaluative journals, blogging, portfolio development, peer to peer crits, viva interviews, artefacts, performance, reports, scale models, and presentations, exhibitions, video, film, photographs.

There is a work-based experience module in the second year of the programme, which is a core module for all students enrolled on the programme. This will give you the opportunity to use and develop the skills you have learnt in a professional environment. The School of Art encourages enrichment in all aspects of its delivery, including guest lectures, live briefs with external companies, trips and a comprehensive induction programme. This will hugely enhance your experience and give further vocational context to the techniques and theories you have learnt.

The Creative Industries as a whole are a growing area of the UK economy, and the Film and Media production industry is a key contributor to this, generating billions of pounds of revenue and thousands of jobs. The UK is seen as one of the leading countries in the development of screen-based content, with blockbuster movies and high-end TV productions taking advantage of the availability of unique locations and facilities. The career opportunities leading from this programme include:

Students that complete this course should be equipped with the skills to go and work in the Film and Media Industry in their specialist area. Further study is also an option, with progression through to a Level 6 top-up qualification available from September 2023 (subject to approval).
