Overview
If you want to work in with children and young adults in schools and colleges, study our Level 4 Certificate for the Advanced Practitioner in Schools and Colleges (HLTA). You will develop the key skills needed to successfully enter the world of teaching and education.
Key Info
This course will be a mix of different types of sessions with a small number requiring physical attendance and then also live online group sessions and tutorials. You will also need to undertake study independently.
You will further develop the knowledge needed to work successfully in a professional education context. You will learn more about the ways individual and groups learn and the teaching approaches that enable them to achieve their potential. The barriers that can prevent successful outcomes such as mental health issues will also be explored as well as how to maintain and improve wellbeing. You will enhance your knowledge of how to ensure an inclusive environment is being delivered as well as how to work in partnership with families and other professionals. You will carry out a research project in order to implement change in a workplace.
There are 5 units:
- Enabling individuals to learn
- Understanding how to support children and young people to improve their mental health and wellbeing
- Working with other to support individual needs and disability in a school or college
- Working with families and other professionals in a school or college setting
- Implementing change in school or college setting
Entry to this course requires you to be working be in a support role in a school or college as well as a Level 2 qualification in English and Maths. Level 3 qualifications are preferred but experience can be considered. You will also undertake an interview to confirm suitability.
Please note that you will need access to a laptop and the internet in order to participate in both the taught sessions and the assessment.
You will be assessed via an electronic portfolio and a range of evidence will be used: written assignments, professional discussion, reflective logs, evidence from your workplace and an observation of your practice.
You will be required to be in an education setting either as a paid employee (preferred) or on a voluntary basis at least one day per week. Your setting could be any type of school working with children from 5 years of age upwards or a college.
Successful completion of this course can lead to progression to further study or employment. You will further develop the knowledge required to provide high quality support in an educational setting. This will enable you to progress your career to become a HLTA/similar senior roles or could be used to provide a qualification in order to confirm you in these roles.
You may choose to progress to:
- Foundation Degree in Supporting and Managing Learning in Education (with 40 credits RPL)
This can be used as preparation for or evidence of readiness for Higher Level Teaching Assistant status in schools. Can support application for leadership, mentoring, supervision and management opportunities in the workplace.
Fees
Course fees are £811 plus an £82 registration fee. An Adult Learner Loan can be applied for.
