Overview
A short course (working at Level 3) to support subject knowledge development in Mathematics of those working or aspiring to work in Further Education teaching or training.
This course is ideal for those who wish to improve both their own personal skills in Mathematics (numeracy) and skills in helping their learners with the Mathematics (numeracy) in their courses.
It is designed as a bridging courseto the Diploma in Teaching Mathematics in the Lifelong Learning Sector, a required qualification for Mathematics/Numeracy subject specialist teachers within the sector. It also provides a recognised Level 3 mathematics qualification for those wishing to applying forQTLS status after completion of a full mathematics teaching qualification.
The course may also act as a stand-alone CPD activity for non-mathematics specialists who wish to develop their own mathematics and skills and those of their learners through embedding mathematics within vocational courses and other specialisms.
Key Info
There will be an emphasis on the development of both personal and teaching skills in Mathematics (numeracy). Current approaches in Mathematics teaching will be explored with a particular emphasis on collaborative learning and applying skills in the classroom.
- Number: Representing, calculating and exploring connections with whole numbers, fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion. Including indices, roots and standard form.
- Statistics : Sources of data, Representing and the use of graphs, charts and statistical measures. Probability.
- Algebra: Linear and quadratic equations, solving, rearranging, factorising. Applications.
- Geometry: Constructions, loci, transformations, Properties of shapes.
- Trigonometry: Pythagoras, Sine, Cosine and Tangent ratios, applications and problem solving
Entry to this course requires a Level 2 (GCSE Equivalent) in Maths.
There are no additional fees to this course, you only require a laptop and access to an internet connection.

Assessment by assignment tasks and portfolio work.
The course provides accredited professional development and so enhances teaching practice. It can also be used to apply for QTLS which provides enhanced employability.
If you decide to follow up this course with further study, there are qualifications for both Mathematics specialists and for vocational teachers who embed mathematics and numeracy development in their teaching. Bradford College offers the Level 5/7 Diploma in Mathematics Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector.
