Course Overview

If you love cars and enjoy fixing things, a career as a motor vehicle technician is the ideal job for you. This Level 1 course will suit you if you want a solid introduction to the specialist role of an automotive technician or refinisher.

This qualification will provide you with the basic knowledge and skills to be a service technician and provide a gateway for further learning or progression to an apprenticeship if desired.

Course Structure

You will complete units on Health & Safety, safety working practices and specialist units chosen from a range.

Some examples of the units available include:

  • Vehicle fuel and exhaust systems
  • Vehicle spark ignition systems
  • Vehicle electrical systems.

Key modules on this course include:

  • Motor Vehicle Maintenance Techniques
  • Electrical and Electronic Systems Operation

Air Conditioning and Climatic Control Systems Operation and Repair

  • Fault Diagnosis and Repair using Electrical and Electronic Diagnostic Equipment
  • Functional Skills including Maths, English and ICT.

Entry Requirements

You must be aged 16 or over and have GCSE English and mathematics.

You may benefit from having already completed the Entry Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Systems Maintenance or a similar qualification. You will need to have a genuine interest in the subject and able to meet the physical demands of moving and handling involved in the role. English and mathematics skills would be helpful.



You could extend the number of units you have completed at Level 1 to broaden your skills further and achieve a Certificate or Diploma. You could also progress to the Level 2 Award, Certificate or Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles. You could also apply for an Apprenticeship as a Motor Vehicle Technician

Study English and Mathematics at Level 1 or above

Use Mathematics as part of your course.

How You Will Be Assessed

You will build up a portfolio of work including knowledge and practical assessments by working in our classroom and vehicle workshop. This portfolio will be externally assessed.
