  4. Your timetable may consist of a twilight commercial salon working to 19:30 one evening per week replicating that of industry practice and maximising commercial client assessment opportunities. 

Course Overview

The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical and Media Make-up is a Technical Qualification aimed at 16-19 learners who are in a full-time Level 3 education programme and wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed make-up artist, providing hair and make-up services in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries.

Course Structure

Throughout this qualification you will develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and Health and Safety. You will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to provide a wide range of creative make-up services in media, theatre and fashion and photographic settings. You will also style and fit hair pieces and apply false eyelashes as well as understand the related cosmetic science that underpins the subject.

You must achieve all mandatory units:

  • Health and Safety in the Salon
  • Cosmetic Make-up Science
  • Media Make-up
  • Style and Fit Postiche
  • Photographic Make-up
  • Anatomy and Physiology for Make-up Services
  • Airbrush Make-up
  • Cosmetic Camouflage
  • False Eyelash Application.

You will develop communication and customer service skills, an awareness of environment sustainability and commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed.

Entry Requirements

Level 2 Diploma or equivalent qualification in Hair and Make-up. Four GCSEs at a minimum of Grade C/4 including English and Mathematics.

English and/or Mathematics will be included in your timetable if you have not achieved a GCSE at Grade A*-C in these subjects when you commence your course.

How Will I Learn?

You will learn practical skills in excellent purpose-built training salons working in a commercial training environment. Practical knowledge will be supported by theory lessons. Assessments of practical skills will be graded Pass/Merit/Distinction in a range of unit assessments and summative synoptic assessments. You will be required to produce a developmental portfolio and complete two external exams graded Pass/Merit/Distinction.

Skills You Will Develop

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for theatrical and media make-up and includes all the required elements to work effetely as a Make-up Artist in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries. 

Benefits

On completion of this qualification you will be eligible to become a members of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC). As a specialist Make-up Artist, you could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts such as: professional make-up artistry settings working with performers, theatre, film, photographic studios, beauty/hair salons, self-employment, cosmetic counters or product training.

Things You May Need

Professional salon uniform, including black ballet pumps, and a make-up kit. You must purchase a professional salon uniform prior to commencing your programme of study. Uniforms are available to purchase at College Welcome Sessions, Taster Days and Enrolment Day. A kit list will be issued at induction.
