Course Overview

During the course you will have the opportunity and support to develop excellent mathematical, analytical and critical thinking skills which will greatly enhance  your future prospects whatever path you choose. Physics is fundamental to a large range of disciplines giving you a wide choice for progression to university level study or employment.

 

Course Structure

This course is taught in a hands-on manner, in new facilities with small class sizes and excellent equipment, by specialist physics staff.

You will study a total of six Units over two years: 

  • Practical Skills in Physics
  • Foundations in Physics
  • Forces and Motion
  • Electrons Waves and Photons
  • The Newtonian World and Astrophysics
  • Particles and Medical Physics.

 

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade A*-C/9-4 including Grade B/6 in English Language, maths and two sciences (either double award or singles including Physics).

You will be required to study A level mathematics alongside A level physics.

How You Will Be Assessed

You will be examined in three theory exams, taken at the end of the second year: 

Paper: 1 - 2hours 15minutes

Paper: 2 - 2hours 15minutes

 Paper: 3 - 1hour 30minutes

 In addition, you will produce a practical practical portfolio: 

Twelve practical activities, forming the practical endorsement. The endorsement is assessed in-class, not in an exam and is reported separately to your final grade.
