  2. Training with MAC and Illamasqua products will be utilised. 
  3. You will be required to work towards GCSE Mathematics and English within your study programme.
  4. Your timetable may consist of a twilight commercial salon working to 19:30 one evening per week replicating that of industry practice and maximising commercial client assessment opportunities. 

Course Overview

The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Make-up Artistry is a Technical Qualification aimed at learners aged 16-19 who are in a full-time Level 2 education programme and wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed hair and make-up artist.

Course Structure

Throughout this qualification, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and Health and Safety. You will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to plan for and provide make-up applications, hair preparation services, fashion and editorial make-up and face and body painting. You will develop your abilities to ensure continuity services are adhered to for make-up application and hair services, whilst developing the abilities to produce a total look for competition work.

You must achieve all mandatory units of study which include:

  • Health Safety and Hygiene
  • Make-up Applications
  • Hair Preparation Services
  • Continuity Planning for Make-up Services
  • Dress and Finish Hair Services
  • Continuity Hair Services
  • Anatomy and Physiology for Make-up Artists
  • Total Look for Competition Work.

You will develop communication and customer service skills, an awareness of environmental sustainability and commercial skills all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving, teamwork and research skills will also be developed.

Entry Requirements

Level 1 Diploma Hair and Beauty. Four GCSEs at a minimum of Grade D/3 including English and Mathematics.

English and/or Mathematics will be included in your timetable if you have not achieved a GCSE at Grade A*-C in these subjects when you commence your course.

How Will I Learn?

You will learn practical skills in excellent purpose-built training salons working in a commercial training environment. Practical knowledge will be supported by theory lessons. Assessments of practical skills will be graded Pass/Merit/Distinction in a range of unit assessments and summative synoptic assessments. You will be required to produce a developmental portfolio and complete two external exams graded Pass/Merit/Distinction.

Skills You Will Develop

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for beauty therapy and includes all the required elements to work effetely as a Make-up Artist.

  • Face and Body Art Painting
  • Fashion and Editorial Make-up.

As a hair and make-up artist you  could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts including: theatre and film, beauty/hair salons, self employed make-up artists and cosmetic counter staff.

You may wish to extend your knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical and Media Make-up.

Things You May Need

Professional salon uniform, including black ballet pumps, and a make-up kit. You must purchase a professional salon uniform prior to commencing your programme of study. Uniforms are available to purchase at College Welcome Sessions, Taster Days and Enrolment Day. A kit list will be issued at induction.
