Course Overview

This course will develop your interpersonal skills and provide the opportunity to choose your pathway in Hair or Beauty at Level 2.
You will learn basic Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy skills.

Course Structure

Modules on this course will include, but are not limited to:

  • Shampooing
  • Presenting a Professional Image
  • Styling Hair
  • Make-Up Application. 

You will also study Functional Skills in English and IT, as well as Employability and Personal Development Skills. You will also have the opportunity to study additional courses to give you a further qualification.

Entry Requirements

Two GCSEs at a minimum of Grade D/3 (preferably in English and Mathematics) or Level 1 Functional Skills English and Mathematics.

 You also need be be self-motivated, enthusiastic and have a positive attitude towards hair and beauty.

We expect you to be hardworking, have a cheerful disposition and treat everyone fairly and with respect.

You need to be willing to commit to 100% attendance.

English and/or Mathematics will be included in your timetable if you have not achieved a GCSE at grade 4 or above in these subjects when you start your course.

  • By understanding the theory of what you are being asked to do.

This will take place in classrooms, salons and Learning Resource Centres.

You will develop skills in:

  • English and IT
  • Personal presentation
  • Health and Safety
  • Employability skills.


This course will support you in gaining confidence and will give you a foundation on which to base your chosen route of progression.

In addition to the exciting lessons you attend, you will be able to take part in extra curricular activities, such as attending exhibitions and shows.

You will also be able to gain additional skills by participating in the annual 'Skills Week' which enables you to have access to people that work within the Hair & Beauty industry.

  • Be able to enter hair and make-up competitions.

How You Will Be Assessed

You will be expected to:

Write assignments, create projects and undertake practical assessments.

Things You May Need

You will be required to purchase and wear a uniform and buy some equipment such as make-up and brushes. All the necessary uniform can be purchased from the Department throughout July, August and September.
