Course Overview

The field of Beauty Therapy & Make-Up Artistry is an ever expanding one and this qualification will develop the knowledge and skills that you need to enter this exciting and rewarding industry.

This course is ideal if you are interested in gaining a national qualification in Make-Up and would like to eventually pursue a career in the theatre, film or television industry. At Level 2 you will gain an excellent range of skills which will provide you with a starting point towards a career in the beauty and make-up industry.

You will be introduced to aspects of beauty and make-up, learning a range of techniques and styles, including applying make-up and photographic make-up. You will have the opportunity to visit trade shows.

The course moves at a pace to allow you to develop as an individual and manage your own learning with assistance from our experienced and dedicated staff who will give you full support as you develop your skills and abilities. You will develop and maintain a high level of professional behaviour and work ethos which is required when you go into employment in the industry.

On completion of this course, you may progress onto a Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects Hair and Media Make-up.

Course Structure

  • Creating an Image
  • Body Art Design
  • Nail Art
  • Face Painting.

Entry Requirements

You should be aged 16+ and have three GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above (including English and Mathematics) or be working towards Level 2 Functional Skills English and Mathematics.

You should be hard-working, be of a cheerful disposition and treat everyone fairly and with respect.

You will be interviewed and you will be given an initial screening test for Literacy in which you must achieve Level 1.
Experience of working in the Beauty and Make-Up industry will be taken into consideration.

You need to be willing to commit to 100% attendance.

If you do not meet the requirements of the above you may be offered Level 1 Introduction to the Hair & Beauty Sector.


English and/or Mathematics will be included in your timetable if you have not achieved a GCSE at grade 4 or above in these subjects when you start your course.

How Will I Learn?

You will learn by being actively involved in the course and taking part in demonstrations, practical sessions and knowledge sessions. 

You will have access to guest speakers, trips and visits.

Skills You Will Develop

Functional Skills in English and Mathematics along with practical beauty therapy and make-up skills.


Undertaking this course and gaining this qualification will open up a career pathway in the beauty and make-up fields or enable you to progress onto a Level 3 qualification and eventually into Higher Education.

In addition to your exciting learning experience you can participate in extra curricular activities such as attending make-up shows, exhibitions and 'World Skills' competitions.

How You Will Be Assessed

You will be assessed by practical observation, portfolio building, assignment writing and written tests.

Things You May Need

You will be required to purchase and wear a uniform and buy some equipment such as make-up and brushes. All the necessary uniform can be purchased from the Department throughout July, August and September.

You may also have to provide some of your own models and there may be additional costs for extra curricular activities such as attending exhibitions or trade fairs which may be incurred during your training.

A camera will be an advantage so that you can take photographs of your work for your portfolio.
