Course Overview

The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy is a Technical Qualification aimed at learners aged 16-19 who are in full-time Level 2 education programme and wish to pursue a career as an employed or self-employed beauty therapist.

Course Structure

Throughout this qualification, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and Health and Safety. You will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to consult with clients whilst providing a range of beauty treatments including facial treatments, skin analysis, manicure, pedicures, waxing, eyelash/eyebrow treatments and make-up application.

You will develop knowledge, understanding and skills within the following mandatory units of study:

  • Health and Hygiene
  • Consultation Techniques
  • Manicure Treatments
  • Pedicure Treatments
  • Waxing Services
  • Facial Treatments
  • Skin Type Analysis
  • Eyebrow Services
  • Eyelash and Eyebrow Tinting Services
  • Make-up Application
  • Anatomy and Physiology for Beauty Therapists.

You will develop communication and customer service skills, an awareness of environmental sustainability and commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving, teamwork and research skills will also be developed.

You will be required for 30 hours to do a work placement in a salon.  You will be released from your normal timetable for one week in the year.

Entry Requirements

4/C in both English and Maths GCSEs

English and/or Mathematics will be included in your timetable if you have not achieved a GCSE at grade 4 or above in these subjects when you start your course.

How Will I Learn?

You will learn practical skills in excellent purpose-built training salons working in a commercial training environment. Practical knowledge will be supported by theory lessons. Assessments of practical skills will be graded Pass/Merit/Distinction in a range of unit assessments and summative synoptic assessments. You will be required to produce a developmental portfolio and complete two external exams graded Pass/Merit/Distinction.

You will also learn via online learning through Moodle and COLA.

Skills You Will Develop

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for beauty therapists and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a beauty therapist.

Employability skills such as effective communication, problem solving and research skills will also be developed throughout qualification.

Once you have completed the course there is potential to progress onto a Level 3 beauty therapy course or employment in the beauty industry.


In addition to your excellent learning experience at the College you can participate in extra curricula activities such as attending UK beauty exhibitions. The course also offers the fantastic opportunity to gain new skills and the opportunity to participate in competitions.  This is highly sought after for additional training by external companies, celebrity guests and staff offering the latest techniques and technologies.

Things You May Need

Professional salon uniform, including black ballet pumps, and a beauty therapy kit. You must purchase a professional salon uniform prior to commencing your programme of study. Uniforms are available to purchase at College Welcome Sessions, Taster Days and Enrolment Day. A kit list will be issued at induction.

There will be additional costs for enrichment activities such as trade fairs, spa day etc… which you will incur during your training. You will have to provide some of your own models for practical assessments
