Course Overview

The one year Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma in Engineering Science is designed for students over the age of 19 wishing to progress to Engineering- based Higher Education provision. This pathway may allow progression to degrees such as Medical Engineering, Mechanical and Medical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Mechatronics and Robotics.

Course Structure

All students attend classes in Engineering Science, Mathematics, Physics and Study Skills. You will complete 15 ungraded units in:

  • Study Skills
  • Further Study Skills
  • Introduction to Engineering Science
  • Introduction to Mathematics
  • Introduction to Physics.

You will complete 21 graded units in Engineering Science with units in:

  • Mechanical Engineering Technologies (exam)
  • Principles of Electrical Engineering
  • Research Project

You will complete 12 graded credits in Mathematics with units in:

  • Algebra, Geometry and Sequences
  • Calculus
  • Foundation in Statistics.

You will complete 18 credits in Physics with units in:

  • Electricity and Magnetism
  • Principles of Physics
  • Foundation in Statistics
  • Research Project.

The course offers you 60 Credits at Level 3 and will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Entry Requirements

GCSE English and Mathematics at a minimum of Grade C/4.

You must be aged 19 or over.

How Will I Learn?

A wide variety of teaching methods are used including lectures, group work, practicals and tutorials.

You will be supported throughout your studies by a personal tutor.

Skills You Will Develop

In addition to the skills gained in engineering you will also develop skills in independent research, critical thinking and evaluative skills, study skills, interview skills and interpersonal skills.


The course will offer a bespoke Engineering Access to HE provision.

Students with an Access to HE Diploma in Engineering will be accepted onto Bradford College's HNC/HND Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical & Electronic) courses.

Expect Also To

Spend around 15 hours a week for studies outside of your college timetable. You will need to allow this time for assignments, lesson preparation and revision activities. If you have a job, we recommend that you do not work more than 15 hours per week due to the intensity of the Access course.  You should also expect to work with others and independently, meet deadlines and complete work to a high standard.

How You Will Be Assessed

Assessment on Access programmes involves a range of methods such as essays, presentations, reports, research investigations and two end-of-year examinations. You will have a combination of 15 ungraded and 45 graded units. For the graded units you will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.
