  Overview

These English for Speakers of Other Languages or ESOL courses are for adults (aged 19 or over) whose first language is not English, and who are living or trying to settle in the UK. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at Bradford College offers a dynamic and professional approach to language learning: speaking and listening, reading and writing. Come and improve your English in a supportive and engaging environment, using the latest technology. We offer ESOL courses from Entry Level 1, 2 and 3 to Level 1, at which stage you can access ESOL with your choice of vocational area. All courses will involve enrichment activities (short residential visits and/or trips to museums etc) as well as career advice and guidance. You will also be able to access a wide range of ESOL resources on our Virtual Learning Environment.   Homework is set at the end of every class. There are regular Module tests throughout the course. You will be working towards examinations at the end of the course. There are three examinations per level (Speaking & Listening, Reading and Writing). English is an essential skill needed to study and work; completion of this course will give you the confidence to use English in everyday life. If you’re 19 or older you may need to pay a fee.

  Key Info

ENTRY LEVEL 2: This is for learners who may have been studying before and want to progress with their English skills. You will gain a City and Guilds Certificate in ESOL at Entry Level 2 (Speaking and Listening). It may be possible to complete the full qualification (Reading and Writing) if you make enough progress during the year. Your tutor will assess you and there will be mock examinations to ensure you are ready to take this examination. Our highly qualified teachers will enable you to achieve a qualification in ESOL Skills for Life at an appropriate level and you will have the opportunity to progress to either our vocational or academic courses in the future.  Your ESOL course will be five to six hours a week, depending on which skills you are developing. You will develop the confidence to communicate effectively in your local community and will engage with other learners from different backgrounds and cultures. All our classes include skills (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) and Language (Grammar and Vocabulary). Classes are delivered at four different levels from Entry Level 1 (Beginner) to Level 1 (Intermediate). The skills and language used in each class will depend on the level of the class. You will learn about life in the UK (Citizenship).  Topics include: History, Geography, Law, Government, Celebrations, Health, Housing, Work and many others. You will study in regular classes with other students at the same level. You will work as a class, in groups, in pairs and on your own.
There are no specific entry requirements however, you must have an awareness of the alphabet and forming letters. You must visit the College to take a short English test and have an interview with an English teacher. Please note that taking a test and having an interview does not guarantee an immediate place in an ESOL class. You may have to wait until a place becomes available or a new course starts. At the start of your course, your tutor will give you a course handbook that you will need to keep with you for the duration of your course.
Your tutor will assess you and there will be mock examinations to ensure you are ready to take this examination.

This is representative of the most common fees scenario, but actual fees can vary depending on a number of factors. Please contact us if you need more guidance.
