Course overview

During the course, you will have the opportunity and support to develop excellent mathematical, analytical and critical thinking skills which will greatly enhance your future prospects whatever path you choose. Physics is fundamental to a large range of disciplines giving you a wide choice for progression to university level study or employment.

A Level Pathways

If you are interested in proceeding with A Levels then then you have 4 different pathways that you can choose from. With each pathway you must choose 3 A Levels. Other combinations are available.

What you'll study

This course is taught in a hands-on manner, in new facilities with small class sizes and excellent equipment, by specialist physics staff.

You will study a total of six Units over two years:

  • Practical Skills in Physics
  • Foundations in Physics
  • Forces and Motion
  • Electrons Waves and Photons
  • The Newtonian World and Astrophysics
  • Particles and Medical Physics.
  • This course is taught in a hands-on manner, in new facilities with small class sizes and excellent equipment, by specialist physics staff.

    You will study a total of six Units over two years:

    • Practical Skills in Physics
    • Foundations in Physics
    • Forces and Motion
    • Electrons Waves and Photons
    • The Newtonian World and Astrophysics
    • Particles and Medical Physics.

Assessment

You will be examined in three theory exams, taken at the end of the second year:

Paper: 1 - 2hours 15minutes

Paper: 2 - 2hours 15minutes

Paper: 3 - 1hour 30minutes

In addition, you will produce a practical practical portfolio:

Twelve practical activities, forming the practical endorsement. The endorsement is assessed in-class, not in an exam and is reported separately to your final grade.

Entry requirements

GCSE Combined Science or Physics
Grade 5
GCSE Maths
Grade 6

You will be required to study A level Mathematics alongside A level physics.

Next steps

On successful completion of the course, you will be in a position to progress to other Further Education study, Higher Education on a range of science-based degrees, employment or a Higher Apprenticeship. Tuition fees

If you are 16 to 18 years old you won't have to pay tuition fees.

If you're 19 or older you may need to pay a fee.
