Course overview

This course will provide you with a PGCE at Masters level and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Working closely with specialist staff in both College and placement schools and colleges, you will gain the knowledge, skills and understanding needed for a newly qualified teacher, based on the strengths of your own degree.

The course is designed to help you to fulfil a wider teaching role (including that of pastoral care) within your chosen educational context. Throughout the course, we place particular emphasis on providing equal opportunities for all students working in a multi-ethnic society. There is also the option of experiencing teaching within the 16-18 age range.

Online, distance learning Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses are available for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, English, Geography, Computer Science, Spanish and French. We offer 28-week (GCSE & A level), 16-week (A level only) and 8-week (GCSE only) courses for each of these subjects, allowing us to cater for the individual needs of students.

What you'll study

The course will develop your professional attributes, knowledge and intellectual qualities to the level required to be a successful newly qualified teacher. This will be achieved through theory and practice during your 120 days on school placement and 60 days in College. You will also have opportunities to research your specialist area and to familiarise yourself with the changing curriculum requirements in schools and colleges.

Scientists attend a short field trip to improve their subject knowledge and to demonstrate and practise the skills required to organise out of school visits.

Your time in College is devoted to extending your subject knowledge, preparing for, and reflecting upon, the work you do in school, and attaining 60 credit points (three modules) at Master’s level through academic assignments, which are all closely related to teaching and learning.

The course builds upon the subject knowledge and independent study skills which, as a graduate, you will have already acquired. College-based sessions are also concerned with the professional skills which all teachers need. Course tutors work closely with managers, mentors and teachers in placement schools and colleges to provide you with advice and support for the progressive development of your teaching expertise.

College sessions consist of lectures, seminars, tutorials, micro-teaching environments and, where relevant, workshop or laboratory work.

Assessment

Assessment involves the completion of Master's level assignments which lead to the award of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education at Pass, Merit or Distinction level.

Successful completion of two placements (by meeting the required Standards) means you will be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

There are no formal examinations on the course.

2:2 or above
GCSE English
C/4 or above
GCSE Mathematics
C/4 or above

A satisfactory DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) and health check are also required.

Biology – Your degree must contain at least 50% pure science ie Chemistry, Physics or Biology and we would normally expect you to have at least lower second class Honours. Alternatively, appropriate knowledge developed through employment or voluntary work of Chemistry may be acceptable.

Chemistry – Your degree must be scientific in nature and reflect aspects of the relevant National Curriculum for either subject.

Citizenship – You should ideally have studied one or more of the following:  Politics, Economics, Law, Sociology, Social Policy, Global Development, Human Rights or Philosophy.

Computer Science – Your degree must contain relevant subject knowledge and we would normally expect you to have at least lower second class Honours. Alternatively, appropriate knowledge developed through employment or voluntary work may be acceptable.

English – You should have an English Language/Literature degree or one with a strong emphasis on English Language/Literature content.

Mathematics – At least 50% of your degree needs to be mathematically based.

Health and Social Care – If you are applying for the PGCE in Health and Social Care, you should ideally have a degree in Health and Social Care, or a degree in Health/Social Work/Childcare. You should have a Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care. Experience in working in the Health sector or similar would be a definite advantage.

Media Studies – Your degree should be in Media studies (or a related, associated degree).

Modern Foreign Languages – You need an Honours degree (normally 2:2 or above) or equivalent, that includes substantial study in at least one modern foreign language. Alternatively, you need to be a native speaker of French, Spanish or German with any degree, plus evidence of recent language study.

Physics – Your degree must be scientific in nature and reflect aspects of the relevant National Curriculum for either subject.

Psychology – Your Degree must reflect aspects of the Psychology curriculum.

Religious Education – Your Degree must reflect aspects of the National Curriculum in Religious Education. In addition to RE, we will consider degrees such as Theology, Anthropology, Philosophy or Sociology. We may consider graduates whose degrees have different titles, but which involve the study of substantial elements of one or more of the above areas.

Science – Your degree must support the subject knowledge requirements of the National Curriculum for Science and Physical Education and we would normally expect you to have at least a lower second class Honours. Ideally, you will have a relevant Level 3 Science qualification (such as A level Biology, Chemistry, Physics).

Social Science – Your degree must contain relevant subject knowledge and we would normally expect you to have at least a lower second class Honours. In addition, you should have a Level 3 qualification related to Social Science (eg Law, Politics, Economics or Sociology).

Work experience

Placements vary according to your chosen route and may involve primary schools, secondary schools, sixth form colleges and FE colleges as appropriate.

You will work alongside experienced teachers and mentors who will provide advice and support.

You will be introduced to your new role in stages, beginning with observation and work with individual pupils, then with small groups, eventually leading to your work with full classes.

Scholarships

Scholarships of £28,000 are available in Physics, Chemistry, Languages, Computing and Geography who are starting their training in the 2018/19 academic year. These prestigious awards are aimed at high-quality graduates with a 2:1 or First Class degree, who are passionate about their subject and have the potential to be inspirational teachers.

Scholarships are awarded by professional bodies for these subjects, and scholars will be selected through an additional application and assessment process. Each scholarship also comes with a package of non-financial benefits, such as early career support and membership of the appropriate professional body. To apply for a scholarship and for further information, you should visit the appropriate subject association website:

  • Physics – delivered by the Institute of Physics (IOP)
  • Mathematics – delivered by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), in collaboration with the London Mathematical Society (LMS), the Mathematical Association (MA), Maths in Education and Industry (MEI) and the Royal Statistical Society (RSS)
  • Chemistry – delivered by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).

The scholarship will be instead of the standard bursary, but trainees who are not awarded the scholarship will still be eligible for the standard bursaries.
