Course overview

Plastering is a fine art. Some of the most decorative buildings in the world are plastered to such perfection that you would think it was marble or glass. 99% or more buildings in the country have plasterwork within them so it is always going to be an ‘in-demand’ skill. Everyone thinks they can do it – but when they have a go and get it wrong – they need to be calling you – a City and Guilds qualified plasterer!

What you'll study

In your first year, we will give you the skills you need to gain an apprenticeship in plastering. You are lucky that in West Yorkshire there are many companies that carry out heritage and restoration work on listed buildings and they are crying out for skilled plasterers. Start your journey with us, learn the fundamentals of plastering and then specialise at Levels 2 and 3 and fine tune your expertise.

Assessment

We train you by creating real-life working situations where you have to plaster a range of different materials and surfaces. You will work closely with brickwork students as often these two trades will work hand in hand on site.

Entry requirements

You will be interviewed to assess your suitability for the course.

You will also take an assessment for English and Maths.

Work experience

Many of our students go on to be self employed, so as well as plastering skills, we will teach you how to set up a business and keep the cash flowing in the right direction!

Our students benefit from local site visits and trips to construction companies, such as our award-winning local partner Priestley Construction.

Next steps

Before you start this course you will need to purchase safety boots with steel toe caps and a hi-vis vest, as you are required to wear them when working in the College workshops. Successful completion of a Level 1 course can lead onto Level 2 and Level 3 courses. Your course may include work experience or a work placement that could lead to the offer of a part-time or casual work, or you might work outside of your studies. A plasterer/builder has the potential to earn anywhere between £12K and £40 per year. Working in the construction industry could see you constructing and managing major buildings, structures and facilities. Career opportunities are available through large construction contractors and smaller specialist employers in the public and private sectors. You could also train to become your own boss and become self-employed. Our Careers Guidance Team can assist you with choosing the right course and thinking about where this might take you in the future.
