Course overview

At Level 1 and Level 2, you will learn how to install electrical systems – from wiring up a house to bigger jobs like installing stadium lights at a football ground. We only teach the official City and Guilds Electrical qualifications needed by employers in Bradford and our Level1 course gives you the best chance of becoming an apprentice and earning whilst you learn.

What you'll study

Electricity is invisible, so if you want to know what it is doing – you need to apply some science! That is why your workshop lessons ‘build in’ the theory, so that as you get better with your hands – you are automatically learning the maths you need to explain the theory! Starting off with the fundamentals of wiring different circuits, we will move you from working by yourself to working on a construction project in a team. Our employer partners help us design these projects so they are as close to real life as possible and our employers come into college (or we visit their sites) to give you masterclasses, mentoring and support. Every day you spend with us is geared towards you getting a well-paid career as a professional Electrician – you just need to grab the opportunity with both hands!

Assessment

You'll get feedback on your work in every session so you can plan how you will improve your skills and make yourself more employable. You will be assessed when you are ready for assessment - and not have to wait for the rest of the class to be ready. It is your learning - your way. Like all courses in construction, you will get out what you put in - so if you want your teachers to be recommending you for an apprenticeship you need to show you are trying your best and aiming for distinctions in all of your work.

Entry requirements

You will be interviewed to assess your suitability for the course.

You will also take an assessment for English and Maths.

Work experience

With 8 out of 10 Electricians choosing to work for themselves and be their own boss, we'll teach you how to run your own business and set you up with the work experience and industry masterclasses you need to succeed.

Next steps

Before you start this course you will need to purchase safety boots with steel toe caps and a hi-vis vest as you are required to wear them when working in the College workshops. Successful completion of a Level 1 course can lead onto Level 2 and 3 courses or an apprenticeship. Your course may include work experience or a work placement that could lead to the offer of a part-time or casual work, or you might work outside of your studies. A domestic electrician has the potential to earn anywhere between £12K and £40 per year. Career opportunities are available through large contractors and smaller specialist employers in the public and private sectors. You could also train to become your own boss and become self-employed. Our Careers Guidance Team can assist you with choosing the right course and thinking about where this might take you in the future.
