A Bridging Course (working at Level 3) in preparation for the Diploma in Teaching Literacy and ESOL.

Who is this course for?

Those who wish to improve both their:

  • own personal skills in English (literacy) and
  • skills in helping their learners with the English (literacy) in their courses.

N.B. If you are confident with your English/literacy skills you do not need to do this course.

It is designed as a bridging course to the Diploma in Teaching Literacy and ESOL in the Lifelong Learning Sector, a required qualification for Literacy or ESOL subject specialist teachers.

It may also act as a stand-alone CPD activity for non-literacy specialists who simply wish to develop their own literacy skills and those of their learners.

What you'll study

There will be an emphasis on the development of both personal and teaching skills in English (literacy). Current approaches in literacy teaching will be explored with a particular emphasis on collaborative learning and applying skills in the classroom.  Personal skills will be mapped to Level 3 standards.

Timetable:

The course will taught online with live sessions: Thursday 14th January 2021 for 7 weeks, ends Thursday 4th March.

Week 1: Introduction: self assessment; course content.  Parts of speech (word classes)

Week 2: Types of noun.  Verbs and tenses.  Sentence types.

Week 3: Spoken and written English.  Language form and language function.

Week 4: Reading skills and strategies.  Text cohesion.

Week 5: Writing skills

Week 6: Spelling & punctuation

Week 7: Review: Personal Progress and Progression Routes

Entry requirements

Level 2 (GCSE equivalent) qualification in English.

There are qualifications for both Literacy & ESOL Specialists and for vocational teachers who embed literacy and language development in their teaching. Bradford College offers the Level 5 Diploma in Literacy and ESOL Teaching for Literacy and ESOL specialist teachers.

Fee: £210

Bradford College staff should apply to their line manager for permission and HR for CPD funds.  If you work for another organisation you should provide a letter stating their intention to pay on letter headed paper.  Your employer will then be invoiced.
