Course overview

This course is suited to learners with a genuine interest in a career within the Uniformed Protective Services including: Fire, Police, Ambulance, Prison, Customs & Excise and the Armed Services (British Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Royal Marines).

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Uniformed Protective Services is intended to support progression to further study and accessing higher education. It is also equally suited for learners to progress to employment in the uniformed protective services.

The course is stimulating and varied, as it combines classroom-based study with exciting practical and outdoor activities, alongside numerous experiences with the uniformed services themselves.

What you'll study

Learning is delivered through both theory and practical based sessions.

Further learning will be carried out on work experience, from visiting guest speakers and on day visits and residential opportunities with the Uniformed Services.

You will also be expected to take responsibility for independent study outside of your timetable, as directed by your tutors, using Moodle, the Virtual Learning Environment platform.

Modules you will study in year 1 include the following 2 mandatory units:-

  1. Teamwork, Leadership and Communication in the Uniformed Protective Services
  2. Behaviour and Discipline in the Uniformed Protective Services (Externally Assessed)

Two further units will be selected from the following options:-

  • Skills for Outdoor Activities and the Uniformed Protective Services
  • Expedition Skills
  • Introduction to Criminology
  • Police Powers and the Law
  • Professional Development in the Uniformed Protective Services
  • Improved Written and Verbal Communication skills
  • Ability to work Independently and in a Team
  • Academic Writing, Research and Presentation skills
  • Self-Confidence
  • Self-Discipline
  • Time Management
  • Personal Presentation / Appearance
  • Instructional and Leadership skills
  • You will have the opportunity to access free health and fitness development facilities at Bradford College.
  • Our lecturers all bring a wealth of experience, having all served in the uniformed public services.

Well established links with the uniformed services allow for valuable experiences,

  • to be gained throughout the course and for a range of uniformed services.
  • The opportunity to take part in the Combined Cadet Force programme and the relevant and transferrable skills and knowledge this will develop.
  • Progress coaches and intervention officers support your journey to success through your programme of study.
  • On successful completion of the course, you will have the option to progress onto Higher Education courses or begin applications to your chosen uniformed public services.

You will be supported through the UCAS application process for progression on to Higher Education universities with the UCAS points gained on the course.

  • You will be advised to purchase the course uniform which can be viewed / tried on during the induction process and ordered / purchased online.
  • You will also need appropriate training kit for practical activities in the gym / sports facilities.
  • Pens, paper and any other relevant stationary, which needs to be brought to all lessons.
  • The course text books are available to buy as a paper copy or can be accessed online, free of charge, as an e-book, once you have enrolled.

Assessment

Internal Assessments

3 of the 4 units on the course are internally assessed. Ways in which you can be internally assessed include:-

  • Written assignments including reports, leaflets and posters.
  • Synoptic Assessment – Applying learning, knowledge, skills to a vocational task.*
  • Practical activities / Role Play
  • Individual and Group Presentations

*The synoptic assessment is carried out on the Teamwork, Leadership and Communication in the Uniformed Protective Services unit

 

Externally Assessed Unit

1 of the modules (Behaviour and Discipline in the Uniformed Protective Services) is assessed through a written exam lasting 2 hours which will assess your knowledge and understanding of the units learning outcomes once it has been delivered. Support materials are given for this exam and it is possible to re-sit the assessment if required.

Entry requirements

4 GCSES Grades 4 and above / A-C, preferably including English Language and Maths but it is possible to have one GCSE still to study, preferably maths only. Each individual learner / grade profile will be reviewed for their suitability for the course.

Preferably a related qualification e.g. BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Uniformed Public Services

A genuine interest in future careers in the uniformed services and / or Higher Education studies in related fields

Positive academic performance on previous college courses or at schools previously attended.

Work experience

It is expected you will cover up to 80 hours work experience on the course. This will include specific placement on experiences with a range of uniformed services.

Day visits, guest speakers / workshops and residentials with the Uniformed Services are all included within this timeframe and your tutors and our work placement officers will arrange these for you.
