  Overview

The Award offers a basic introduction to the applied science sector. On this course you’ll be learning about a wide selection of topics including the study of living organisms, making useful scientific Investigations, practical actions to protect the environment, healthy living and science in the world to name a few.

The BTEC Level 1 Introductory Award in Applied Science qualification will give you the opportunity to acquire and develop generic, transferable and sector-specific skills in order to complete tasks and demonstrate a level of achievement that enables you to progress to further learning.

Our experienced staff will deliver a variety of lectures, seminars, workshops and presentations alongside independent student research. You’ll learn about scientific principles and how to put them into practice in the workplace. Visits and guest speakers are also used to help enrich your learning experience.

The course is based on a Programme of Study, which consists of:

  • A City & Guilds Employability and Personal Development Award
  • English and Maths
  • A Tutorial Programme
  • Work Experience

Learners will study three core Employability units and two sector specific units over the duration of the course. The Level 1 Introductory Award in Science is designed for learners wishing to gain an introduction to a chosen vocation area. The Award offers the opportunity for learners to study a sector unit and plan for their next steps by completing the mandatory unit:

  • Developing a Personal Progression Plan

 

City & Guild Employability Award: Career planning and making applications, Keeping Safe, Stress Management.

 Level 1 Award in Applied Science

Two units must be achieved, of which one must be taken from Core Skills (Group A), Developing a Personal Progression Plan and one unit from the sector options (Group B).

Core Group A units – learners must complete one unit

  • A2 Developing a Personal Progression Plan

Sector Group B units – learners must complete one unit

  • ASc5 Testing the Quality of Products
  • ASc6 Carrying Out a Scientific Experiment
  • ASc7 Investigating Variations in Plants and Animals
  • ASc8 Measuring Waves Used in Technology
  • ASc9 Practical Actions to Protect the Environment
  • ASc10 Making a Chemical Product
  • ASc11 Testing the Properties of Products
  • ASc12 Investigating Crime Scene Evidence
  • ASc13 Exploring Biology
  • ASc14 Exploring Chemistry
  • ASc15 Exploring Physics

 

You should have keen interest in Science and achieved a minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade 2 or E or above. Entry level 3 qualifications with minimum Entry 3 in Maths and English are also accepted.

English and/or Maths will be included in your timetable if you have not achieved a GCSE at grade 4 or above in these subjects when you start your course.

You will be assessed through a range of methods that include coursework, assignments and presentations.

30 hours of relevant experience of work are included in the course. Our students work in partnership with the National Citizens Service (NCS) programme which helps to develop key employment skills and behaviours needed for progression to work.

Successful completion of the BTEC Level 1 Applied Science can help you embark on a career in a Science related area. The subject can be the beginning of the journey to your career in science, such as becoming an Environmental Scientist, Food Scientist, Forensic Scientist and Medicine.

If you are 16 to 18 years old you won’t have to pay tuition fees. If you’re 19 or older you may need to pay a fee.
