Course Overview

The course will run for 2 hours a week. This qualification prepares you for further learning and training whilst developing an understanding of the teaching and learning environment in a school setting.

You will cover a variety of topics such as Schools as organisations, understanding how to keep children and young people healthy, safe and well, and understanding how to communicate with children, young people and adults. You must be at least 16 years old.  An Entry level 3 in English would be desirable. 

This is a knowledge-only qualification. You do not need to be working or undertaking practical placements to take this qualification. However, a volunteer placement would enhance the student’s experience.

 You wll learn via taught sessions and practical activities. On completion of your course, you can progress on to the Level 2 Award/Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning.

We use a variety of teaching and learning methods. Learners are able to submit work in a variety of ways to suit individual needs, which include computer work, leaflets, mind maps, charts, verbal feedback e.g. audio tape, lists, video tape, collage, tables, displays, booklets, bullet points, posters, diagrams, drawings etc.

The course will be taught very informally by an experienced tutor.  You will learn in a relaxed and supported atmosphere with lots of support and encouragement. There is no exam. You will be required to complete an assessment task booklet for each unit. 

Modules covered:

  • PWS1: Understand Schools as Organisations
  • PWS2: Understand how to keep children and young people healthy, safe and well
  • PWS3: Understand how to communicate with children, young people and adults 

You will meet new friends and develop your confidence. You will be able to develop your communication and teamwork skills, by working in pairs and small groups. You will develop your written English with help of your tutor.

If you are aged 19+ and studying a Further Education Course at Bradford College, you may have to pay course fees. Course fees are dependent on the number of hours and which course is being taken. Actual costs can be obtained from our FE Registry team.
