  Overview

The BTEC HNC in Hospitality Management is a high quality technical qualification , ideal for a career in the hospitality sector. It will help you become a professional, self-reflecting individual, able to meet the demands of employers in Hospitality Management and adapt to a constantly changing world.

This course offers you a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning, while allowing for the acquisition of skills and experience through the selection of optional units across a range of occupational sectors at Level 4. This effectively builds underpinning core skills while preparing the student for subject specialisation at Level 5. You will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study, directed study, and workplace scenarios.

You will learn about managing the customer experience, professional identity, how to build your hospitality business toolkit and leadership and management in the service industry. Optional units include managing food and beverage operations, food production and marketing essentials.

You will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study, directed study, and workplace scenarios. At Level 4 you will develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of Hospitality Management. Graduates completing the Higher National Certificate will be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the basic concepts and characteristics of travel and tourism.

You will be able to communicate accurately and appropriately and you will have the qualities needed for employment that requires some degree of personal responsibility. You will have developed a range of transferable skills to ensure effective team working, independent initiatives, organisational competence, and problem-solving strategies. You will be adaptable and flexible in your approach to Hospitality Management, show resilience under pressure, and meet challenging targets within a given resource.

You will have access to additional enrichment activities and trips, which will involve working in teams on projects. Work placement opportunities will be provided, however, they are optional as they will be charged accordingly. You will have access to industry specialist speakers, delivering high-quality guest lectures. Work experience opportunities will be provided. You will have access to the professional placements team based at college. You are also encouraged to find your own, especially during reading weeks.

At Level 4 you develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of hospitality through five core units, which include one unit assessed by a Pearson-set assignment.

Entry to this course requires a Level 3 qualification in English and Maths equivalent to a grade 4 or C.

T Level qualifications are accepted, a T Level PASS with a minimum of a grade D (equates to 72 UCAS points).

Assessments and projects are chosen to help you progress to the next stage this means some are set by the Centre to meet local needs, while others are set by Pearson (BTEC). You are required to apply your knowledge to a variety of assignments and activities, with a focus on the holistic development of practical, interpersonal, and higher-level thinking skills. Assessment examples include assignments, projects, presentations, observations and portfolios.

Work experience opportunities will be provided. You will have access to the professional placements team based at college. You are also encouraged to find your own work placements, especially during reading weeks.

Successful completion of the course will provide you with commercial acumen, understanding and hospitality skills for success in a diverse range of roles in food and beverage, accommodation, events and contract catering services in hospitality.

The Level 4 Higher National Certificate provides a solid grounding in hospitality, which you can build on should you decide to continue your studies beyond the Certificate stage. The Level 5 Higher National Diploma allows you to specialise by committing to specific career paths and progression routes to degree-level study.
