This course prepares trainee teachers to teach within the primary age range (3-11) on your chosen route: 3-7, 5-11 or 7-11.

The degree fulfils the minimum requirements of the Core Content Curriculum for teacher training as well as achieving beyond this criteria.  We have strong partnership links with local schools throughout West Yorkshire and beyond.

At the heart of the degree is school experience, and we provide an extensive programme of school placements throughout each year of the course, giving you the opportunity to practise your teaching skills.

We also use extensive contacts with local schools for day visits during modules in all three years of the course and have a series of visiting speakers to enhance your understanding of all aspects of primary school life and learning.

This course progressively leads you to the standards required of the Core Content Framework as a minimum requirement leading to trainees beginning their Early Career Teacher (ETC) in their first and second year of employment.

In the first year, you will have a general introduction to all curriculum areas, a virtual placement and a block placement in a primary school setting.

During the second year, your development of all curriculum areas will continue with support from a block teaching placement in Semester 2 and a placement in an alternative environment to enable you to explore further opportunities within the education sector. You will have full control over this placement by arranging this yourself, with support from our Placement Office. Trainees have used this as an opportunity to teach abroad, work in special schools, in education departments of hospitals, in outdoor education or in museums.

In the third year of the degree, the focus is on teaching the curriculum in a creative, cross-curricular environment.  Your third block teaching placement also provides you with the opportunity to conduct your own research to inform your practice and to support the practice of other teachers.  This leads to the completion of a Dissertation.

Learning and teaching pedagogy runs throughout the course to ensure your professional development is based on a solid theoretical foundation and is built on as you move through each year of study. Teaching methods mirror the kind of approaches used in schools and combine a wide range of resources including video, ICT and field visits. We encourage you to take responsibility for your own learning and offer you high quality support from personal tutors.

We cover all subjects that are part of the primary National Curriculum to ensure you are a strong candidate for teaching.

You will develop the skills and knowledge needed to deliver English, mathematics and science in creative and engaging ways.

  • Teaching and Learning in the Core Subjects Using a Cross-curricular Approach

You will also learn about computing in the primary curriculum and enhance your personal skills.

Teaching children how to be healthy through physical education and teaching food and nutrition is part of your academic study as well as your teaching practice.

Entry to this course requires 96 UCAS tariff points, A Level qualifications at grade C or equivalent, GCSEs in English Language, Maths and Science at grade 4 or C. A satisfactory DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) and health check are also required prior to commencement of the course.

Please note that in accordance with DfE guidance, qualifications in key and functional skills at level 2 are not equivalent to GCSEs in terms of content and therefore do not meet the minimum entry requirements of the course. At the interview, a written assessment may be used to evaluate your strengths and needs. We also consider individual applicants who can demonstrate relevant learning, work/voluntary experience, using our Recognition of Prior Learning process.

You will be assessed through coursework assignments, oral presentations and audits related to subject knowledge. Your practical teaching skills will be assessed by your performance in school at each stage of the course.

We anticipate a continuing need for teachers of primary children in the foreseeable future, particularly in meeting the needs of different communities. This course will give you the training you require to fulfil these needs.

Full-time: £8,750 per year.
