Healthy Eating - Catering Department Initiatives

The Bradford College Catering Department has been actively working to two key principles over the last few months:

  • The Healthy College initiative, to gain Healthy College status which has now been achieved
  • The Department initiatives include the following:
  • Removal of table salt and the resulting reduction in usage
(Most people hadn’t noticed it had gone)
  • Use of tuna fish in spring water
  • Reduced salt & sugar baked beans
  • Reduced usage of saturated oils and increased use of olive oil where applicable

We have an ongoing process of promoting and raising the profile of healthier options and we have a range of guides to support this. We are in the process of setting up Student Forums in conjunction with Jane Marshall, to address issues that our prime users may have, to meet changing needs and expectations.

Our initiatives on vending will see, on a rolling basis, the introduction of water and non-carbonated vendors. All display fridges have a greater proportion of water and fruit juices, supported by salads, fresh fruit and yoghurts.

We obviously welcome views and opinions on our initiatives and any ideas to further improve this trend.
