What's it like in Halls?

Staying in halls is a good opportunity to make friends and meet other students. You will be sharing a flat with other students from Bradford College who may be from the UK or another country, so you will get to learn about different cultures. As you will be sharing a kitchen and sometimes a bathroom, it is expected that students will be considerate and tolerant of other people’s ways of life.

Safety and security in Halls

The safety and security of our students is a key priority for us. That's why we have a wide range of measures in place to help ensure that you stay safe during your time in Halls. These include 24hr on-site security at Laisteridge Lane, regular patrols and CCTV provision. All entry systems are operated by use of personal key or fob.

For your personal safety there are fire and heat detectors in each room and kitchen. These must not be tampered with in any way as this could endanger yourself and your fellow residents and will be dealt with seriously by the College.

Bradford College also have a dedicated Security Department that operates 24 hours, 365 days a year. Their staff patrol all areas of the College campus and are in radio contact with the central control room. Around the campus and the surrounding areas you will see Community Support Officers, City Centre Wardens and local Police Officers. They form the new Neighbourhood Policing Team who have specific responsibility for your local community.

Essential items you will need in Halls

You will need to bring the following:

  •  Bed linen – Pillows, pillow cases, duvet (single or double depending on room chosen), duvet cover and towels.
  •  Kitchen equipment – Crockery (Plate, cereal bowl, cup/mug, knife/fork/spoon), cooking pans, washing up cloth and tea towel

We would recommend that you bring your bed linen with you, but wait until you arrive in Bradford to purchase kitchen equipment. Most of the kitchen items you need can be bought inexpensively in Bradford once you have arrived and you might want to share the cost of purchasing these items jointly with your flat mates.

Your Welfare

Bradford College has a Residential Warden living in Halls. They can offer support and information if you are having any problems. We also have a Tenancy Support Officer who is available to help if you have any special requirements or issues in your accommodation.

TVs and electrical equipment

If you bring a TV with you, you must provide your own TV license. It is a legal requirement that you purchase a TV license – go to the government website for more information on purchasing one, or call 0870 600 1236.

Cleaning

You will be responsible for keeping your bedroom and en-suite bathroom (if applicable) clean and tidy. You are also responsible for keeping the kitchen clean and doing your own washing up, although the kitchens are cleaned regularly by Hall staff.  On designated cleaning days, make sure that kitchen surfaces are clear so they can be cleaned.

Furniture within your room

Each room is provided with essential furniture.  You can bring your own items with you such as TVs or music systems. Please note that your rent does not include contents insurance to cover your possessions, so we would advise that you arrange your own cover. Each room will have a notice board where you are welcome to display photos or posters to personalise your room. Students are not permitted to redecorate their rooms.

Communal spaces

As some areas in hall are held communally, such as shared kitchens and hallways, you are responsible for caring for these areas and not causing damage. Laisteridge Lane has a common room with a plasma TV and vending machines, which all residents have access to.

Smoking

Students are asked to note that smoking is not permitted inside halls under any circumstance.

Parking and Bicycles

There are parking spaces available at Laisteridge Lane for an annual fee, which can be arranged when you have completed your room booking. Vehicles parked on site without a parking permit are liable to be wheel clamped, with a fee payable for release.

There are a number of bicycle racks available on site which you can attach your bike too. If you do bring a bicycle, we recommend that it is not a very expensive one. Students must not keep bikes in their rooms, as this can cause damage to walls.

Can I go in/out of the halls whenever I want?

You are free to go out and socialise when you wish, but we do ask you to remember that you are part of a community when living in halls and that you should enter/leave halls quietly, especially at night.

Can I live with friends?

If you would like to share with a friend, please mention their name when you apply and we will try to accommodate your request, although this cannot be guaranteed. It helps if you apply at the same time.
