The winners of the exciting competition Bradford College launched to mark the unveiling of the Accommodation Strategy, were invited to return to Trinity Green - the building they were responsible for naming. Course Tutor, Kay Marshall, Learning Assistant, Jean Plowman and their students from Personal & Community Skills, beat off stiff competition to scoop the £100 prize and have their names immortalised forever within a memorial in the new building.
Principal, Michele Sutton, OBE was delighted to invite the winners of the Phase One naming competition to a presentation ceremony held at Trinity Green, where the memorial was unveiled. The students were thrilled to meet the Principal and overjoyed to be selected as the winners of the competition.
Michele explained that almost 100 competition entries were received to name the new building. Congratulating each worthy winner, Michele said: “We’re here today to recognise your positive contribution to the College, by coming up with the name for the Trinity Green Campus. It gives me great pleasure to unveil the memorial in a lasting tribute to you all. As students from Personal and Community Skills, you have reflected what the course is all about, the promotion of independence and life skills. This project has given you something real, which is an outcome and result of the work that you have done on your course. The memorial is testament to you and your course tutors and a fabulous display of how our students achieve at Bradford College.”
Kay’s group was selected as the name reflected the innovative and inspirational nature of the new building. The new building is eco friendly with low carbon emissions, designed to maximise natural light/ventilation built with sustainability in mind.
Explaining the inspiration behind the naming of the building, Course Tutor, Kay said: “Part of my syllabus is to promote the importance of environmental and related green issues. Both Jean and I encouraged the students to think about the area surrounding the new build. We took the students up there to observe the green aspect of the surrounding area. The name was developed out of a group discussion. We thought about place names in the area, the environmental and the innovative implications of the new build.”
Kay continued: “Both Jean and I are delighted our group of students with learning disabilities were part of the winning team! They’re immensely proud of being students at Bradford College and get a great deal out of the experience. Their success in being part of the group who thought up the new name has raised their profile and given them a stake in the future of the College!”
